I haven't heard much about the use of "coonass" before. Bayoutider, does this really offend people over there?

I was born and raised in Wicksburg, AL and was constantly referred to and used terms like redneck, hick, etc. Is coonass on the same line as these?

The fact that 99.9% of the nation has no clue what "Coonass" really means shows that this really shouldn't be that big of a deal. If it were really that bad, people WOULD know. JMO.

The origination of the term coonass has several stories. One is it referenced Cajun women as the way they look from above during prgnancy. I find this story hard to believe since coonass does not appear to be gender specific. The story that seems the most believable is the the Cajuns who faught in the independence of Texas were coonskins hats. When you are behind them, your are looking at a coon ....
Most blue collar Cajuns look at the term as a badge of honor. Only recently, some upper class Cajuns have attempted to make the term out to be offensive yet in many of the Cajun parrishes, you will find many souvenirs shops selling t-shirts with coonass on them.

The people who seem to have made a big deal of this either don't know the history of the term and feel that it is a reference to African- Americans or intentionally made an issue of it knowing that most people do not understand that the term has nothing to do with African-Americans and used it as an opportunity to make Saban and Alabama look bad once again.

If you want to tree a coon you get a coondog. If it's a real good coondog, you might could bury it here:

http://www.coondogcemetery.com/

which has the following requirements:
***************
"We have stipulations on this thing," says William O. Bolton, the secretary/treasure of the Tennessee Valley Coon Hunters Association, and caretaker of the Coon Dog Cemetery. "A dog can't run no deer, possum -- nothing like that. He's got to be a straight coon dog, and he's got to be full hound. Couldn't be a mixed up breed dog, a house dog."
***************

Now if a coon was a reference to a person instead of a raccoon and you wanted to track one, you would get a bloodhound, not a coonhound.

Finebum's remarks after he hung up with Perrin were funny. "Now there's one cultured coonass."

As an appointed representative of French Poodles forced to relocate to various parts of the U.S., I have officially sent you a letter for using such a deraogatory term for my fellow species. No four legged creature should be subjected to such derogatory remarks as "Coondog".

On a real note. I have asked Warren to send me one of his discipline letters. Being the stupid redneck that I am, I called a buddy of mine in South Louisianna, as we were laughing at this whole thing, I told him he was a crazy coonass! I feel awful, just awful.:biggrin2: :biggrin2: :biggrin2: :biggrin2: :biggrin2: :biggrin2: :biggrin2: :biggrin2:

I wish I had a dollar for every Registered Coonass tag I have seen on a pickup or every tee shirt with Registered Coonass on it or any Registered Coonass souvenir I have seen in some Cajun restaurant along I-10. If I only had a nickel for everytime I heard someone call another person a Coonass or someone call themself a Coonass I would be a very rich man.

Rich or poor it doesn't matter because I have seen a lot of Rich Coonasse still wearing bib overalls and suckin' on crawfish heads. Rice and Oil has been very good to a lot of people in Louisiana and I learned very quickly not to judge a Cajun by the way he dresses or what he drives.

Actually I would take less offense to being called a Coonass than a Redneck. The proper term for an Alabama fan should be "Crimson-neck" anyway. ;)

Let me give you a good laugh. I don't give a rip about what some homer from Tigerbait has to say about Nick Saban. That pretty good assesment is only your's and Mike Scarborough's opinion. Tigerbait, Tigerdroppings, Tigercrap, Tigerdrivel I could care less what they are crying about now.

Give Mike my regards when you link or copy and paste this.

Is this Mike Scarborough the same guy that misquoted the parent about Saban's visit? The parent came back and said that the reporter slanted it in a way that he never meant?

You would think that with all the gloating you tiggerets do about how great your team is since Saban left you'd have more to show for it. You've had one of the most talented teams in the country the past two years and haven't won the big one. Some call that underachieving....

So why don't you go yell into y'alls trophy case and "listen" to the echo then come back so we both can laugh.....then you'd have two "funny guys" laughing.

Excuse me, am I really hearing from someone who claims to be an LSwho fan who actually doesn't know the meaning of the word coonass and who might claim to have never used the word himself. Now THAT is funny stuff.

I like how Finebaum handled it. It was clear this guy wasn't a solution to anything, just a peon of a really messed up government. What has annoyed me about this whole thing though is how some parties are clearly using confusion between this term and another as a way of making it look worse than it is. On another note, who else but the French come up for a word for a diseased prostitute that can't work in a brothel?

Actually, I would give Finebaum a little credit here if he would have allowed this Warren guy to finish his explanations.

Also, I hate to say it, but when he was finally allowed to answer the question, I agreed with him 100%. Finebaum simply didn't WANT to hear the man's explanation so he talked down to him and was absolutely rude and unprofessional. He sounded like a typical 'majority' representative.
