Coach Saban is not a very nice guy.

I haven't heard of Saban doing anything bad toward anyone either - He does not have time for the media but I have not any real instances of him being a jerk.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
I do not recall Bear being anything but accomodating to the media during his PRIME. I would like to have my memory refreshed. I recall him being pretty good with the media...?

I think the next year they did NOT go to the Junction and had a much better season

I think Bear admitted the 'Junction' was a mistake

I never saw the movie

I guess a picture has to be drawn so a few can understand the positive that came out of Junction.

The survivors of Junction became the foundation, and leaders, of Texas A&M winning the SWC a few years later.

The survivors of Junction became successful on and off the football field. Gene Stallings is a strong example of that fact. Coach Bryant made men out of boys.

The survivors of Junction were and are forever thankful for what Coach Bryant put them through. The ring the Junction Boys presented Coach Bryant is a strong indication of that.

I think some are missing the point on one of the reasons Bear was such a great coach - It was certianly not because he was a jerk or a terror - The players had great respect for him, loved him - they would block those bigger lineman because they wanted to please Bear Bryant - The other teams would take his picture - get his autograph not because they thought he was a bad*** but because they respected him. If you think Bear got his players to play over their heads at times due to being a hard*** then you have misunderstood. Sure he would crawl you if need be but Bear's players wanted the pat on the head from the Bear - That is what I have heard it was all about pleasing the coach not playing well out of fear from the coach. They would walk across cut glass for the man and that is not because they feared him but because pleasing him meant everything.

Bear would on occasion invite reporters back to his room after a game to discuss the game & shoot the breeze.

If you are basing Bear Bryants success on the Espn made for tv movie Junction Boys then you should turn off the TV and read a few books about the man

The majority of the media was putty in his hands.

Yeah, but they wanted to please him because they were scared to death of him walking down from that tower if they screwed up.

Had lunch yesterday with a friend who'd just got through working his camp and observing him up close and personal. While he'd certainly back what Alan has observed as a parent, the coaches working under CNS came back with a little different perspective. We did some speculating about the probable life span (or lack thereof) in someone as intense as he is... :)

Oh I completely agree with Earle about our assistant coaches. I saw enough during the camp that tells me we'll have turnover in our assistant ranks. Some will leave because they can't handle Saban's style and pressure and others will leave because of great success and new opportunities. I am not sure how many we can expect to leave at any one time, but I would not be a bit surprised to see 1 or 2 turn each year. If we don't have coaching turnover, I'll truly be shocked.

With that said, I can't imagine any coach with the possible exception of Major not realizing what they were doing when they were offered the job with Saban. It's not like the guys reputation isn't well known within the coaching ranks! That may limit the immediate turnover (meaning after 1 season) but it still will not surprise me one bit if there is assistant turnover.

>Yeah, but they wanted to please him because they were scared to death of >him walking down from that tower if they screwed up.

not true. Sure they did not want to be chewed out but they excelled because thet did not want to let Coach Bryant down. It was not about fear - it was about pleasing the man that they respected.

You can not get positive results from using fear - respect & trust will get it done much better

Thought you said you never watched the Junction movie so how can judge it, it's story, and the success it did bring?

Have read Books about Coach Bryant. One being the Missing Ring. Did you read the section about the crucible?

Fear does motivate to bring success. I know, I spent 24 years in the US military. Some of our greatest military heroes lead people with fear such as Patton, Halsey, Puller, Pershing, etc, etc. They had to to kill japs, NAZI, etc to win and end wars to protect freedom. Those guys would never make it today in our "kindler - gentler" society.

I know a few who played for Coach Bryant who were scared to death of him.

I refuse to watch a made for TV movie brought to by ESPN about Bear Bryant

I would rather read about it from people who were there not a TV show on ESPN

At the end of the movie there was a group of players who were there that gave some comments on camera. That was worth waiting for.

I hate to pop your bubble, but one All American lineman from his first MNC team is a good friend of mine. He managed to get through four years of playing for CPB with only one conversation (about his playing weight) when he was a freshman. The reason was that my friend was terrified of him. He said that, if he saw CPB on one side of the street, he'd cross to the other side to avoid him. After he graduated and went on to become All-Pro, their relationship mellowed. I'm not saying that there wasn't respect, even awe, also, but the fear factor was always there. Hell, I was afraid of him and I didn't play. I saw him most days and we spoke, but I wouldn't have thought about saying any more than "Morning, Coach."

oK I was wrong. I didn't think it was fear thing with Coach Bryant - I thought he was a bigger than life character that was intimidating but not because he was mean (ie not a nice guy). Thanks I am certialy not above being educated.

Now I know.

My friend went into Coach bryants office to say he was transferring to another college - Said it was one of the hardest things he ever had to so - Bear said that was fine but we are going to win an NC here. Friend transferred to a smaller school -blew out his knee & of course Bama won the NC

It took me close to a year to ask Coach Bryant to sign a postcard of him walking on water. He graciously stopped, signed the card and said he remembered having that picture taken like it was yesterday. He did have a sense of humor.

We ended up frequently at the old Queen City Drugs. I'd be alone, usually sitting in a booth and he'd be sitting always over at table, drinking coffee and smoking Chesterfields. He actually watched me some. I used to try to get up the nerve to walk over and ask him if he wanted to talk, but I just never could do it. All he could do was say "no." Wasn't it?
