'Concerned' Nike halts release of new Vick shoe

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. The whole Vick clan is some piece of work, if half of what has been reported about them is true.

He's up to his eyeballs in this. And he IS going down. Just watch how fast the Falcons and the NFL walk away once the big corporations start pulling their money out of anything that has to do with Vick. He's finished in the NFL and likely will end up where he belongs, mopping prison floors.

The other shoe dropped in the Michael Vick case Thursday.

Two days after the Falcons quarterback was indicted on federal dogfighting charges, athletic shoe giant Nike said it is suspending the release of its latest product bearing his name, the Zoom Vick V shoe that had been scheduled to hit retail stores next month.

Other Michael Vick model shoes, as the Zoom II worn by Vick a few seasons ago, will continue to be part of Nike's product line, but release of the latest model has been suspended.

Nike said in a statement that it is "concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations" against Vick and considers "any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent."

Vick has had an endorsement deal with Nike since entering the NFL, and the company said it isn't terminating that contract because Vick "should be afforded the same due process as any citizen."

The company does not plan to pull other shoes and shirts bearing Vick's name from the market.

Nike officials declined further comment.

Local Atlanta sports radio talk shows are saying that Arthur Blank will come out with some sort of decision as what the Falcons intend to do about Vick, initially at least, within the next 24 hours.

Speculation seems to be a suspension of four or more games up to the entire season.

Whuh? :p_frown:
You could have written that in Chinese and I still wouldn't comprehend it.
Since I have a Pit I always read articles when they are blamed for attacks (instead of the irresponsible owner) I didn't say that, I was just repeating what I read. I do think an irresponsible owner of a pet that seriously hurts someone should be punished

I don't know if I agree with Emmit on this one. I would if the only situation here was that the people involved were associates of Vick OR if they were on his payroll.

But the fact that he OWNED the Kennel based at the house AND he owned the house, the kennel raised Pit Bulls and they found over 7 carcasses at the property already leads me to think that maybe, just maybe he knew what was going on there.

And if you're still not convinced take a look at this link for some more examples of issues with Mr. Vick.....

why even have a trial. you have already convicted the guy. it is amazing to me at how much hatred there is for one guy even before the dog fight allegation. most people seem to just hate Vick no matter what he does. so when this comes up you hate him so he is guilty. we know nothing about this, all we know is what we are told.

Unfortunately, $130 million brings some responsibility with it.
You know ... to whom much is given, much is expected?
A federal indictment isn't exactly a fiction novel to be confused with Harry Potter.

I didn't hate him, I never was impressed with him as a pro QB (pro athlete sure) but it looks like he was heavily involved with this stuff. We shall see almost everyone deserves a trial in a court of law....etc. Kind of hard to think he is not guilty with all that stuff found on his property though. The feds don't throw around indictments without good cause

If he is guilty I hope they make an example of him so others will think twice before doing this kind of stuff, but I doubt it.

Actually, I am a pretty big Vick fan - on the field. There's not hatred. I've met the man before (at his restaurant) and he was very nice.

What I am disagreeing with is the concept that someone is "out to get" Vick. That's an insane concept being bantered around most commonly with an accompanying allegation of racism. Both of these things are completely untrue.

The facts of this case are that one of the guys who lived at the house was busted for possession of a large quantity of marijuana - enough to be charged with intent to distribute. When they searched the house (which is fairly routine when there is an intent to distribute) they found evidence of dog fighting.

This wasn't something they went looking for - it was dropped on their doorstep. In fact, it was only when the county prosecutor was slow in moving on this that the Fed's stepped in to evaluate the situation. When they found evidence of interstate travel it became their case.

And if, for some reason, the information presented isn't correct, why didn't Michael Vick, in the nearly 90 days since the initial arrest and the 7 weeks since the search of his property, come forward and discuss anything with law enforcement (with or without counsel)? Why hasn't he made a public denial of the evidence as presented?

But to your "why even have a trial" point, I would hope that Vick would figure out a way to save the taxpayers millions and just cop a plea that allows him to walk away somehow.... like turning over the names of every other operator, agreeing to testify against them, giving up the right to own or posses a dog, etc. That is, of course, if he actually did know about this.

Two issues here.

1. Nice to see Emmitt knows so much about the federal government's case. Didn't anyone ever tell him, "When there's an important issue out there, give an educated opinion if you have a good idea what you're talking about. If you're not sure what you're talking about, the only thing you can do by opening your mouth is look like you're 11 years old.''

2. It sounds very much like Smith empathizes with Vick's plight and doesn't find it very objectionable that Vick might have put a few bucks down on dogfights. Is he serious? Is there anything justifiable about Vick going to a single dogfight, or gambling a dime on a dogfight? Should the feds, once they had evidence from four corroborating witnesses that placed Vick in the middle of one dogfight after another, have ignored the evidence and not gone after him?

I have a bad feeling about Smith's tenure at ESPN, and it hasn't even started. His comments on Vick are so idiotic and inappropriate that a few people at the Worldwide Leader have to be thinking, "Uh-oh. What if we've gone and hired someone who's very famous but not very smart?''

I've never liked or disliked Vick. I don't think he's a good quarterback just like I don't think that Brad Smith would be a good NFL quarterback. That having been said, if he is guilty then I hope they hang him from the rafters.

I don't care what race you are or what church you attend etc, if you play football ( or any other sport ) and are in the spotlight like that then you need to keep your nose clean. It's a shame when grown men act worse than my 4 year old. Of course, my 4 year old knows that there are consequences to her bad actions.

Michael Vick chose a profession where he is, among other things, a spokesperson and public image for his employer. He can be fired at the mere appearance of impropriety just like a supermodel can be fired for having legs that "appear" to be too flabby. I refuse to believe that a roaming dog-fighting ring secretly snuck onto MV's property and setup shop. He put himself in this position SOMEHOW. If it turns out he isn't convicted of anything, I still wouldn't bat an eye if the NFL suspended him.

There WAS a dog-fighting ring on his property. If his lawyers are able to get him off it still won't change that fact. He will be innocent technically, but do you really believe that will make the dog-fighting arena not exist?

I used to be somewhat of a fan. I'm a Saints fan but I admired Vick's ability to take over a game and I blamed a lot of his trouble as a passer on Atlanta lacking the right players. However, I learned my lesson with OJ. Just because a guy is a football star doesn't make him innocent, nor does having a high priced legal team getting you off the hook. This apparently goes well beyond just happening on his property, I have heard witness testimony (ESPN had this well before the indictment) that places Vick AT THE DOG FIGHTS. Couple this with testimony that says he ordered the death of some dogs and he's obviously guilty. If this just happened on his property it is one thing, but when multiple people come out and place Vick at the fights and say he had involvement than it becomes obvious what was really going on. Electrocution, rape stands, the whole nine yards and Vick was in the middle of it. As I said before I wish him the worst...
