Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

I was coming home from class this morning and saw some workers where the south end zone would be. I don't how important this is to the actual thing getting going, but they were drilling test wells in the concrete right outside the stadium where the South endzone will be. Maybe Alex can run by there and post some pics bc I'm not allowed to do so on here.
This is actually the first step in construction of this size. What they are doing is getting soil samples. They need to know how far down the bed rock is. That way they know how deep to drill the to place the drill shafts. This is what supports the structure.
So in some way the constructions has begun.

If the Super 6 were in BDS, I might be inclined to actually go watch the games. Legion Field (and that whole area) scares the crap out of me.

I wouldn't mind seeing them rotate the Super 6 between BDS and Jerrdan Hair every other year. Until the Troy folks start whining...of course.
Troy has the AISA, why would they want anything else?

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

Since the NEZ couldn't be joined to the E&W decks, because of the difference in heights, I'd assume that situation will be the same on the SEZ. So, no dome could ever completely enclose the field. I'd assume that a partial dome could be supported on the E&W decks. John, do you have any idea why the decks are of unequal height? Seems like someone didn't think ahead...
This is the only picture I could find that showed the NEZ. I didn't take any of the transition. There is a bold white stripe that appear to wrap from one the NEZ to the WUP. This seems to align but the top of each is uneven. The NEZ has more seating rows which would cause misalignment. Also, I think the angle of the seating levels is different. I'm guessing that has to do with sight lines. I wish I could find a better photo to give a better guess.

The NEZ has roughly the same number of rows as the sideline decks. It just looks like more because it's much steeper.

Here's a good photo. Maybe on the N there was no need for the sun shade based on fall sun angles so they decided to just change the angle of the seating. Maybe filling in the gaps assuming comparable geometry would've been too expensive for the amount of seating gained. Depending on how the original framing was done it may have been that the edge of the E&W seating didn't have enough capacity for additional seating to tie onto. Again, I'm totally speculating.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

PS, note that the walkway on the NEZ is in front of the seating while on E&W it's behind the seating. This may have been what drove it. The walkway pushes the seating toward University. Keeping the walkway so that it didn't effect the front elevation from Univ. may have been what drove this. The front of the stadium looks more like a building than a stadium. You could see the folks at the Zone, but those guardrails come up chest high.

It sure looks like there are more rows and that the walkway scooted the lower row, probably 8' or so backwards combined with a different angle for sight lines is all coming together to cause the different geometry.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

You can't start construction on adding on to a house that quickly, let alone a stadium. From everything I've heard it's been to announce the plans this off season and start construction the day after the last game next year. That would also fit with the construction plans of the last two expansions.

The new south endzone would therefore open in time for the start of the 2009 season - the one everyone has been pointing to as our best first shot at a BCS Championship.

wow. Good times. Good times.
Surely you aren't suggesting that the entire project would be completed in less than a year. That would be great if they could start by Dec. 2008 and finish before August 2009, but I doubt they can get it done that quickly. We shall see.

I heard somewhere that AHSAA was thing about having the finals player in Tuscaloosa & Auburn. Not sure if it would rotate or 1A, 3A & 5A would be played at one stadium & 2A, 4A & 6A played at the other & rotate that every other year.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

There was something said about having apartments in the SEZ so big dollar donors could stay in the stadium Thursday-Saturday nights.
This is true. That is at least one of the ideas being tossed around.
