This season's offense scored over 500 points for the first time in the history of LSU. Crowton was just a better fit with Les in that they share a feeling that you go for it if you have the tools and are contending for the title. Not that Jimbo was bashful, but he was very conservative and was all about ball control. Long methodical drives that ate up time and led to scores and taking few risks. This cost us some big games, especially Auburn in 2006, when we needed quick points. Crowton isn't scared of the deep pass or of using seven or eight different receivers in a game. He can play ball control or he can play a wide-open offense.I don't really know that the offense as a whole was any better in 2007 than under Jimbo in 2006, but it was a lot more consistent, and that is honestly the key to it all. I was very impressed by it, and said so on numerous occasions.
We don't dismiss Jimbo, he's a big part of LSU's football success in the 21st century. Everybody likes Jimbo. He's going to be a fine head coach in this league some day. Crowton has already been a head coach and will likely be so again in the future. Both are top OC's, Crowton is just a better fit with the players and coaches that Miles is working with today.I, however, wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Jimbo. He was a fine coach in his own right, and his offenses performed at a high level for seven years. Crowton had an incredible year in 2007, but it was just that, a year. Jimbo did it over a very long period of time, and in this business longevity is very impressive.
Indeed. When Nick had a top OC like Jimbo, he did pretty much leave it up to him. There were certain things Nick wanted, but he let Jimbo plan and execute it. Like most successful people, Nick knows his limitations, which is why I expect him to hire a top OC, even if he has to rob him from another school. I think Crowton believes LSU is his best springboard to a head coaching job. But I wouldn't blame Nick for feeling him out.Like a lot of good defensive coaches, CNS needs to keep his nose out of the offense. The problem is, that last season, the setup we had really required him to enter the process as a referee. That's not good. We need a competent OC, whatever his philosophy, who can put a consistent imprint on our offense and free Saban up to concentrate on the defense.
