What I don't get is Auburn fans bragging about having 16 recruits already while we have 7. For starters, quantity is not equal to quality. If you compare the pieces we have, they are better than all the guys they have at that position. Better linemen, a four-star QB, and one of the top backs in the nation. We may have only 7...but the quality of the players is much higher.
Second, I've said it before, but I'm tired of the old Auburn stand-by "well our coach evaluates players in camps." It is an insinuation that Saban is recruiting out of a magazine or website when that couldn't be further from the truth. It's not like we had a flurry of commits over a 3-4 week period on and around our camps just like Auburn has had over the last 3-4 days...no, never. In fact, I think every offer except McCarron and Fluker were extended after an on-camp evaluation period.
Third, our class simply is not going to be big enough for us to match Auburn in terms of quantity. They are probably going to take a full 25 meaning they'll sign ~30 players due to grade and pro ball attrition. We don't have that privilege like last year. We'll probably only have 15-17 scholarships available and will sign a max of 20. Since we are going to be small this class, Saban is being more selective and will have to wait for big name recruits to commit. We've filled most of our most wanting needs with this class already with our grab-bag of offensive linemen. We still need a few interior linebackers and as it stands right now...we should be getting those soon too. The other 5-10 signees are just icing on the cake guys who won't fill a severe need but simply add depth and talent to a team already on the rise.
I'm not going to really get too caught up in Auburn recruiting, because unless we are competing for the guy...I don't care. The fact that we weren't really competing heatedly for these guys with Auburn should tell you all you need to know. Our class isn't going to 32-strong again, but it is going to be a good one. Auburn could sign 20 players tomorrow, but it doesn't change the fact that we already have a potential future star at QB, a top-tier HS tailback, and a bevy of hogs on both sides of the line. Unless, Dre and Nico pull a major coup...it doesn't change the fact that we'll capture the two top players in the state (in my opinion) before February.
