Why don't I like Bobby Bowden?

I would have taken Bowden in a heartbeat. The year we muffed the hire Bowden and FSU started the streak of fourteen straight years of top five finishes.

because he's the coach of the Criminoles and the NCAA has, for some reason, declared him "untouchable" while other schools (cough, cough) can get hammered for anything.

Had he come to BAMA, we'd still be just as 'tainted' as we are now.

No offense to the elderly, but he's a senile old man who needs to hang it up -- just think Terry plus 30 years or so. He's been in retirement for several years.

Would have been a great one. BTY, young'uns on here don't have a clue about what you and I am talking about. Loud mouth's sure messed that deal up, but it did get ol Bobby "B" a lifetime contract at FSU. What could have been... RTR...

He was the beneficiary of a conference that was pathetic for too many years. Notice how since Miami joined the ACC, along with the uprising of teams like Va. Tech, Wake Forest, (cough cough) Clemson, that FSU is no longer top banana? Up until the early part of this decade, Florida State in the ACC was IT. They had no conference championship game until recently, so you could chalk them up for New Years Day by August every year.

Being a Bama fan and living in Tallahassee, I've come to really like Coach Bowden. I live about a 1/2 mile from him, and over the years I've seen him outside a few times while we were out for walks in the neighborhood and he goes out of his way to be nice and strike up a conversation with you. Just a down to earth guy. Bama has always been his dream job. I think he would have been very successfull at Bama.

Amen brother, He wanted the job and would have been singing "Sweet Home Alabama" all the way to T-Town,
What do you think everyone would be saying if he came here and had 14 straight seasons of 10 or more wins? Theres no doubt in my mind if he can do it at FSU he could have done it at Bama.

I concur. I've been able to converse with him being an FSU alumnus and he is a great person. He is also a big Bama fan.

It was for the greater good that Bowden didn't get the Bama job.

Bowden recruits thugs and doesn't adequately punish his players.

We would be saying PAROLE Tide if Bowden got the Bama job.

I'll take Stallings ' shorter tenure over Bowden's all day long.

And that is why I am struggling to figure out why I don't like him. Maybe I'm just mad at the media and their love affair with him and Tommy back years ago. "Bowden Bowl" may have soured me. I just hope they don't start any "Saban Bowl" crap when we go to LSU.

Yeah...what could have been...we could have been stuck with him until JoePa died or retired. Too bad THAT didn't happen...

/end sarcasm

Tell you the truth I really don't like FSU's athletic program and I've seen some shady things over the years as a student. The reason is that they have always wanted to be "Alabama". Maybe, you just don't like FSU and you have transferred your hatred to Coach Bowden because he is always going to symbolize FSU football?

Never been a fav of mine, not to many reasons why, just hasnt. Something just seems "free pass" about him or something. Hard to explain, yes hes had some good teams, but thats about it.

That being said, I would have taken him a few years ago when it seemed bleak and noone wanted us, we settled for Shula. He prolly had a chance, but oh well, good luck to him and better luck to us.....

Ivan Maisel wrote an article from an interview with Bobby Bowden in the weeks preceding the game with FSU last year.

The Tide that Binds

"One of my goals in life is to go back to Tuscaloosa and attend a football game," Bowden said. "You know, just for old times. Sit up in the stands. Of course, it looks so different now. One of these days, I hope I can do that."

He gazed up at his office ceiling, lost in the reverie.

"I hope we ain't playing Florida State."

We?

Everything else aside. He has always been a fan of Alabama.
