Weather thread, Part III

I've seen quite a few reports of flooding issues here in Florida lately due to some heavy rain events. South of me in Brevard County, North of me in Flagler County, and West of me in Lake County.

I lived in Lake County for a couple years when I first got out of college in '77 and have been back a few times since. Really cool area with a lot of interesting history. But like so many areas here - developments have been allowed where they probably shouldn't have been.

This story was on the local news last night:

The historic 19-inch rain storms in Florida's Lake County, Eustis and Mt. Dora region produced washouts that caused senior citizens to evacuate their apartments. One couple spoke to WFTV about the knock on their door by firefighters, who showed them the cliff where their backyard used to be.They're living in a hotel while workers assess whether the ground behind their community is stable enough for them to go back.

Woke up this morning to 50's outside and 60's inside, so turned on my heat for the first time since last winter.

Natural gas furnace. The only gas appliance I have.

Looking forward to yard work later today and for the next 6 months it's going to be wonderful working and playing (biking, old Porsche cars w/no AC, motorcycles, gardening, etc. etc.) outdoors here!

Now back to my morning coffee...... :giggle:

i rode 11 miles to work in 28 degrees this morning. i will probably put a floor at 32-34 the rest of the winter. it was a balmy 45 and windy on the way home.

I once rode about the same distance to work, into a north wind and freezing rain. I changed at the office and left my rain clothes out to thaw and dry through the day. Like you, I swore "never again"...

below 30 or so, i just can't keep my fingers and toes warm while riding and after about an hour, it starts being a real pain. i was using heavy, windproof winter biking gloves and lined neoprene booties over my shoes and had hand warmers shoved in both.

i knew going in it was going to be rough, but i like to calibrate to the different ranges of cold temps as winter riding starts.
