Bama vs Oklahoma round 2 (Friday December 19th)

I'm just not supposed to believe my lying eyes. I understand a sack statistic and the fact that the QB is being pressured constantly and getting hit very regularly. I rewound multiple plays in both the IB and SECCG and watched free rushers or missed blocks affect Ty over and over.
The OL has not been as bad as you are implying. Prior to the AU game Alabama was the 5th best team in the SEC in “sacks allowed per pass attempt”. (It’s probably worse now since the AU and UGA games have been played since I last checked.) And that’s having played most of the best pass rushing teams in the SEC: Mizz, USC, OU, AU. Most QBs are under pressure in the SEC.

This OL made the next to the last cut for the Joe Moore Best OL in the country award. They study much film and stats.

To your point, no doubt Ty has been under fire and is beat up like others, but most here unfairly critique the OL, IMO.

just looking at total sacks isn't close to the full picture. For example, we allowed 2 sacks against USC, but FOURTEEN pressures. That's on 43 attempts, so USC was getting pressure on over 35% ( (2+14)/(2+43) ) of the pass plays. Over a third of the reps pressure was getting through. That's simply not good.

I agree - just looking at total sacks isn't close to the full picture. For example, we allowed 2 sacks against USC, but ELEVEN pressures. That's on 43 attempts, so USC was getting pressure on over 28% of the pass plays.
The point is that it’s the same for other teams. Also, pressured QBs complete passes. Finally, pressured does not necessarily mean hit.

While “sacks allowed per attempt” do not tell the whole story, they are meaningful.

The reason I used “sacks allowed” is that it was the only relevant stat to which I had access for the season. (It’s possible that Alabama fared better if pressures and hits were factored in.

OU had 3 weeks off. I fully expect a lot of stuff we haven’t seen before from the OU offense. I really expect a lot more designed QB runs. It’s the playoffs, no reason to save your QB now, and he is a dual threat QB. Venables alluded to this in an interview, the same way Kirby brought up special team plays before the SECCG. I just hope for once our staff is paying attention.
Three weeks of breaking down our offense, studying the many weaknesses. There is a huge advantage for OU getting healthy and not playing in the conference championship game.

This.

We get beat up by the most physical team in college football while they rest up and prep.

The Championship game must go.

If we lose Friday, having to play in the SEC is worth at least a TD for Oklahoma in prep time and being fresh.

If you survive the SEC grind like we usually do

It's usually a roung trip to the NC Game..

I know a lot has been said about the turnovers and field position from the first contest, but if Oklahoma are a better team now (and they seem to be) we are in trouble. It all comes down to what "being healthy" means for Bama on Friday.

My gut feeling to date has been that this is a bad matchup for us at this particular juncture. And I certainly don't want to lose a third game to them since being in the conference. But I have been getting more confident as the game approaches. Think it will be a good one either way but we really need to find another gear if we are to win this one.

Perhaps some rust will begin to set up for OU. 2 weeks off is one thing, 3 maybe starts to break up any rhythm that has been established.

OU is a difficult team to gauge.

They are 10-2 but could easily be 7-5 with a few bad bounces.

They won via dubious tactics vs AU and honestly should or could have lost to both LSU and Tenn.

I guess if we don’t give them he 1st game they are close to being 6-6.

But somehow they won all 4 of those games.

I think the team we had the 1st half of the season could beat OU best vs best at any site.

But we are just a shell of ourselves now.

I think we can still win but it will take a Massive effort from our Defense and possibly ST’s.

Basically a ‘92 Defense carried type of win where the Offense does just enough but doesn’t beat itself or the team.

I don’t believe those rumors. Playing with a sore back/pulled muscle is one thing. Playing with a herniated disk is coaching malpractice…
Herniated? Probably not. A bulging disc? Possibly. Not saying there is any validity to those rumors circulating.

Unfortunately I’ve had far too much experience with disc issues. I had a herniated cervical disc (C6-C7) in my late 20’s. Not that I was an athlete the caliber of those in college football today, but I was still active in the gym, weightlifting, rec basketball and fast pitch softball. Most times the severity is dependent on the location of the herniated disc and impingement on spinal cord or nerve root. With my cervical disc, it was not severe enough to warrant surgery. Corticosteroids, anti inflammatory meds, and a series of nerves blocks did the trick. However, forty years later it still flares up periodically.

My most recent surgery in late October I had two herniated lumbar discs and spinal stenosis. However, they only operated on one of the herniated discs and cleaned up the spinal stenosis because it was the only one that was symptomatic.

Conservative treatments can keep athletes playing with disc issues. But, like you, I’m doubtful of a disc issue. However, the psoas muscles attach on each side of the lumbar spine. If you bruise either or both of those muscles, it can affect your torso rotation and can be quite painful. It can cause deep back pain, spasms and stiffness. And the only thing that heals it is PT, anti inflammatory meds, and rest.

How it goes early will tell the tale of this game.

Will Ty be accurate early or missing intermediate throws.

Will OU get home early and get Ty rattled.

Will Ty continue to change the play presnap and put the offense right where OU wants them.

Can we gain any yards on the ground at all.

Are the receivers catching the ball or dropping it repeatedly.

If we go for a FG, does Talty get it or does he miss again.

1st quarter will tell the story.

We are a broken offense, I just have no faith in this offense....the players or staff....to get this turned around in 2 weeks. Ty is rattled, the OL is putrid, the WRs haven't been consistent catching, the RBs look slow and lost.

I feel the same... I think they need an off season and a good number of portal and fresh players to retool the system.
