Something that’s been spinning in my head since the game. Many of these models are predicting anywhere from a 7 to 15 point advantage for Indiana. My brain cannot comprehend that for whatever reason.

That also got me to thinking, when was the last time that a new blood won a national championship in college football?

1990-1991? Colorado and/or Washington?

Perhaps that’s giving me illogical confidence. And I know this isn’t for the championship. But history tells us that teams like Indiana don’t win games like this.

In fact, I feel more confident this week than I did going into Oklahoma

But again, that could be just a lingering Nick Saban effect.

Frankly, my confidence level is the same as it was before Atlanta and Norman. Yes I am proud of this team but just how much fight do we have in us after going down the murder's row of teams we just went through? Do we have another one in us? Do we have 2 or 3? Man, I am just glad we are here and as Coach would say, "it is a tremendous challenge and a tremendous opportunity." Indy will be coming to win. We are Alabama after all and that is enough to get any team's attention. Let's just see how much we have in the tank as players and coaches.

In the abstract, I agree with you, although the question would be if/how NIL has changed the balance of power nationally.

The last "team to win their first title" was Florida in 1996, which I learned several years back when I was writing up the poll outcome of all of the national title votes. The last 30 years have seen nothing but teams who have won it previously.

I get that it’s a new financial world. But on the flip the emotional and psychological part of that is still there. It’s hard for a new team to break through and win a first.

Same thing in Basketball unfortunately. Was Baylor the only new blood in 25 years?

I think there is a psychological play here. That can’t be overlooked.

I agree that it’s a factor. I don’t know if it’s enough to turn things in our favor but it’s an element.

Oregon for the better part of the last 20-24 years has perennially been a Top 5-10 team with Heisman candidates and Heisman winners and they have choked under the pressure every single time.

I do think Indiana is a really good team and well coached.

It’s possible they are this year’s tOSU and are either the best team or hottest team or both.

But it’s also possible they are this year’s 2012 ND (paper tiger) with the element of trying to break through added in.

The best we can hope is that Bama shows up and gives 100% effort and as long as we do that we’ll find out about what kind of team IU is one way or another.

This.

People keep falling for Oregon every single year, but every year that team folds down the stretch.

They’ve had at least 4 head coaches over that period, yet they always seem to have the same type of team. Makes me wonder if that brand of football is capable of winning championships.

I didn't watch the full game but Oregon let JMU put up something like 500 yards of offense. I know it was a blowout still but that's a lot of yards...

I'm not saying Indiana can't beat us; they absolutely can, and have been playing better football than us. They are favored by a touchdown, which is insane to say out loud. With that said, I don't think they can win a national championship this year. Their blue chip ratio is 8%. No team since the BCS/CFP has won a national championship with less than a 50% blue chip ratio.

They've had some really nice wins this year beating Oregon, Penn St (who has talent) and Ohio St, but I just don't think they can go on a three game run of beating teams that are way more talented than them.

I don't think you can put much stock into what JMU did in the 2nd half of that game. It was 34-6 at halftime, and I think Oregon was mentally moving on to Texas Tech.

Bama at +7 is the biggest underdog since the 2008 SEC Championship

With all the external noise of how we have no shot and the IU fan smack talk it feels like Miami in ‘93.

I think that was an 8 point spread but nobody gave us a shot either.

I know we were underdogs in ‘08 vs Florida but I don’t remember people treating it like we shouldn’t even show up.

Maybe true. But 500 yards! and also they moved the ball in the first half too. At least for the first couple of drives

Texas Tech will put up just as many if not more yards and I guarantee Oregon will not lead 34-6 at halftime. Tech is going to beat the ducks by 2 or 3 TDs.

Indiana is a good team, but not as good as Ohio State. Ohio State will probably win it all if Georgia does not derail them. If we happen to make the final I would rather face Ohio State. Kirby got the monkey off his back. The 1970 Nebraska team followed up by dominated us to win it all in 1971. We beat them in bowls following the 1965 and 1966 seasons so Devaney was looking for revenge and man did he get it. Johnny Rodgers ran all over us and was catch robbing a service station shortly after and my wife wondered out loud how they caught him. Our successful history with Georgia played a part in them dominating us in the SEC game. There is no history going into this game so the best team, which is Indiana probably wins. If we come to play we got a shot. We did beat Miami under similar circumstances, but we had the best defense to ever play college football. It should be talked about like the1985 Bears defense.

The NCAA recognizes Penn State as national champions in 1911 and 1912. It's on their website.

Being 12-0, ranked #1, dominating #9 Clemson, going up 31-0 on #3 Georgia in the blackout game, and shutting out Auburn will do that.

Florida would go on to win the National Championship after an early season close loss to Ole Miss. Georgia feels like that Florida team this year.
