Another Coaching Apology (Curt Cignetti)

You have to be an IU fan. Nobody here probably knows about any of those people. Or even cares.
That’s kind of the point. Last season Indiana didn’t have Mendoza, had a quarterback from Ohio University, who played the whole year with a torn ACL, and went to the college football playoffs.

Pretty sure they’ll be OK next year without Mendoza.

Pretty sure that’s the point, they will be ok, not great. That level is not sustainable.

Mendoza will be back next year for IU. Mendoza's younger brother was IU's backup QB. Not saying he is as good, but he is the heir apparent at QB.

Thank you. Frankly, it's sickening. Way below the bluest of bluebloods to be jealous over a new blood and to act like they will take over football.

I'm so hoping Miami can figure out a way to beat them. They probably won't, but, when IU starts dominating the B1G year after year and wins 2 or more NC titles, we can start talking about him/them in staying terms. As of now, what he's doing is simply a flash in the pan.
And our fans were gushing over Georgia just a couple years ago. Even though, we've beat them and the only years they beat us is when they get 2 chances.

The QB1 for IU next year is Josh Hoover.
So no competition with Alberto? So pay Hoover the bucks, put the crown on him before he ever takes a snap? Not saying it’s wrong, just assumed they would give Alberto a look. Wonder if Alberto jumps in the portal after the Championship game.

All excellent points.

The IU staff sees Alberto every day, and Alberto has played a bunch in blowouts and has looked excellent, but he doesn’t have anywhere near the arm talent of his brother, or Hoover. If Alberto could throw the whole route tree they wouldn’t have gotten Hoover and would’ve saved the $$ for another position. Alberto also has three more years to play.

If Alberto wants to be the presumptive starter somewhere next year I could see him in the portal.

For any team with less recruiting talent there are position groups that get portal attention and positions that the coaches think they’ve developed in house. Good staffs know those answers.

I've got no real problem with "I win. Google me." It is self-confident, but, as is said, "It ain't bragging if you can do it." Coach Cig has backed it up with a vengeance. They made Alabama quit and then they assaulted Oregon and "when I say assaulted, I mean assaulted!"
Not sure how long this will last, but Indiana fans ought to enjoy this while they can. This Hoosier team has earned it. One more game to go.
Next year, once other programs start enticing away assistants and players, we'll see if Coach Cignetti can sustain the success. I won't be pulling against him. I hope he can sustain this level of success, but it is going to be a challenge.
This is it. Let's see what he does with younger players, not 25 years olds..

There are eight defensive starters that have eligibility to return next year. IU will start four true sophomores on defense in the championship game; Jones, Hardy, Landino, and Ndukwe.

Six offensive starters have at least one year left (one is Mendoza, so really five).

Mendoza was very accurate with those back shoulder passes, and the receivers were great at making contested catches. Two of their three starting WRs will be gone along with their three-deep TEs. The third WR is NFL eligible. There’s no guarantee they will get the same level of production next season with a different quarterback and mostly different receivers.

We experienced a golden age of receiver productivity from 2017 through 2020 and in 2021 to a lesser extent. After Williams and Metchie went down in 2021 and throughout 2022 we had very inconsistent receivers, despite high expectations based on rankings.

IU could still be solid as a team, but it doesn’t take much drop-off in production at skilled positions to have a very different outcome. At the very least it can mean the difference between being NCs or not.

BTW, their top two RBs are done also.

TEs are both gone.

Becker the WR is a true sophomore and can’t go. And Cooper at WR is 50/50 to return. Nick Marsh will take Sarratt’s spot.

The #3 rb Martin is ready, and Turbo Richard is signed and Barrett from Texas is all but signed.
