Frustrating That we are wasting time on skill positions that we cannot afford and do not really need when we do not even have first string OL to put on the field.
More the former and less the later. There are players that would love to come to Alabama. But they are the blue collar type that are playing at the lower levels. We need to find the right ones and that is a lot of work. Not sure we are set up for that yet.I just get the feeling that we are striking out in the portal based on two factors: 1) Not enough NIL $$ to compete, and 2) Recruits not believing in this staff. I hope I’m wrong about #2.
again: Not sure how legit it is. I keep seeing this.
I will post a link to something I saw today. Please look at who’s ranked 1st. They’re involved with the NCAA championship game and do not employ a “GM.”I will reiterate that people will try to make money an excuse, but Alabama didn't have to get in bidding wars for guys Texas was going after. They chose to. That's a strategic move.
Part of the issue to me is that this staff is either getting out-worked or over-whelmed. There's a period where they generally hit their stride, the team is playing good football, they are recruiting well then you get to that late season and suddenly things look a lot worse.
2024 it was the Oklahoma and Michigan losses, one of which knocked Alabama out of the playoff/SECCG and both of which were to teams with mediocre records. Followed up with a weak portal class that actually turned out worse than the already weak rankings.
2025 we saw the blowout losses to Georgia and Indiana, and a portal class that seems to be similarly flailing, with neither quantity nor quality.
I hope it isn't what it looks like, I want to see something better. I can say this much, it's not just money. Money is only an obstacle to people that try to spend their way out of every problem. Money is only an issue in this case because Alabama went head to head with Texas. They also lost out on a guy to South Carolina they wanted while chasing guys Texas wanted. Believe me, South Carolina isn't richer than Alabama in any way, shape or form.

The 10 teams that have gotten off to the hottest portal starts
These programs are already positioning themselves well for the 2026 seasonwww.espn.com
I know where we could save $1,000,000. This is RIDICULOUS.
Ezavier Crowell says hi.Any chance we circle back to Justice Haynes? We need at least 1 RB with vision.
THIS! We are always going to be a program who primarily builds through high school recruiting, and it also happens to be the more sustainable model We are better equipped to handle portal struggles than most of the other teams, because we consistently nail high school recruiting. And I know people worry about being able to keep them, but I'm pretty we sure we still have every player we want from DeBoer's first class, so it's clear those guys have bought in.BTW, we are not the only team struggling in the portal. I think most are. Thing we got going for us is a top 5 recruiting class coming in focused on making us better.
This is what MLB looked like roughly 100 years ago...We basically have the college football equivalent of dodgers or yankees. they can just throw all the money at every high profile player. Everyone else just gets the scraps because they will never be able to compete with the teams with all the money.
Edit: By "we" I mean college football fans.

I was involved with baseball while at the University of North Alabama. Coach Lane had multiple contact and great relationships with MLB scouts. Granted, this was pre travel ball, showcase, etc. A good source for info concerning these diamonds in the rough would be through NFL scouts. They are looking at players across all levels and know a great deal concerning who at whatever school you’ve scouted could help us at X position.Alabama is currently the favorite in many Offensive linemen, and is still targeting a few receivers. I never saw Coleman as a true possibility but was convinced it was possible a few days ago.
I think we arent going to get a “splash” unless Noah Rogers signs…. But hasn’t this been what everyone has been asking for?
Yep, but rankings are based on stars. Stars are based on services who rate players in high school. Frankly, that is a very flawed system so you really have to do your own evals to know what you are getting. Another point is character. Many of these star players are not as coachable as the kid working his butt off wanting to play a role on a team. For the record according to 247, Alabama has the 49th ranked portal class, this after losing 20 guys via the portal. They started out with staff chirping about how they weren't losing anything of importance.
Clearly this is just about money though, since college football heavyweights like Kentucky and Arizona St. have top 10 portal classes. To put it in another context, Alabama now has the second worst portal class in the conference.
And mind you, if they were racking up on sleepers I'd be alright with it and say let's wait to see how these guys pan out. But it's still as of this moment a single digit class, even counting the walk-on tight end!
So if you were CKD or GM CM, what would you do?I will reiterate that people will try to make money an excuse, but Alabama didn't have to get in bidding wars for guys Texas was going after. They chose to. That's a strategic move.

Yep, and Alabama is a brand. Arguably, we have the best brand on the planet. We don't have a lot of billionaires but we do have a great history and, really, the best group of fans on the planet. We will be alright but there will be a rocky road ahead.THIS! Kids are obviously not getting to #2 before deciding...I just get the feeling that we are striking out in the portal based on two factors: 1) Not enough NIL $$ to compete, and 2) Recruits not believing in this staff. I hope I’m wrong about #2.
Nice post. I'd argue that a cannon ball splash is less impressive in a diving competition. Let's dig deep and get some blue collar guys that can open some holes in the running game.Alabama is currently the favorite in many Offensive linemen, and is still targeting a few receivers. I never saw Coleman as a true possibility but was convinced it was possible a few days ago.

I'd agree with you except this is clearly a lack of quantity or quality.Yep, but rankings are based on stars. Stars are based on services who rate players in high school. I've actually said it a few times. But first let's considering the GM's role. He's being paid a million dollars JUST to manage the roster. A lot of teams don't even have that role, so he basically should spend a ton of his time evaluating talent. There should be a big board with hundreds, even thousands of names, people he's evaluated, needs to evaluate, what their evaluations are, who needs additional looks, etc..So if you were CKD or GM CM, what would you do?
Being a critic is the easiest job in the world, so I am anxious to hear your plan![]()
I got bad news for you, it still looks like that. The dodgers bought themselves a World SeriesThis is what MLB looked like roughly 100 years ago...![]()
