I do not understand the consternation over what college athletes will do. They leave? Fine. They stay? Fine. Bama signs who they sign, and we move on and play the hand we have. I am glad our staff isnt overpaying for players. That creates a lot of problems internally. One of the reasons Saban retired was because he couldn’t build a team as he was accustomed to doing. Deborer is doing the next closest thing and addition to managing the resources he has at his disposal. At the end of the day, there are much more important things than CFB. Next year, I will probably watch Bama games, and that’s about it. Probably will sprinkle some FCS and service academies in there too, just for nostalgia’s sake.

The Montana-Dakotas cartel is always a fun one to keep on eye on!

People that level of wealthy literally need help finding ways to spend their money. It's an insane level of wealth that is hard to comprehend.

It's also insanely easy to make money when you're that wealthy. The money they are spending on college teams is nothing when you can make that and then some in interest with pretty safe investments.

I totally understand that but Warren Buffett does not prescribe to that at all. I have a feeling it is going to get old when ROI is not realized.

Today's message: Be patient. Don't get upset with who's coming in for visits and who's committing.

I'm starting to understand the Alabama strategy behind the transfer portal: steady, but consistent approach. Don't overpay for players while other schools are doing that.

Honestly that's smart. It tells me the staff is focused on building the right culture, right attitude and ready to go work. I'm optimistic about the additions for the team so far. If the coaching staff locks down players coming in today and this weekend...this shifts the narrative significantly and for right reasons.

FYI: what Texas is doing is very dangerous and I believe it'll backfire on them. That's a 30-40 million roster they're building and the players they're getting, hmmmmmmmmmmm IMO they overpaid for some of them.

Roster is talented but what about the culture in the locker room? They already were dealing with some messy stuff this past season.

It's not just Texas, but LSU too. Both of them have interesting schedule and both plays each other on November 14th. This time next year I will predict mass exodus from Texas and LSU. TAMU did this and failed.
Great post and thanks for the perspective. I have been browsing through the portal and there really are some good looking prospects all over the board. As Bama fans, we really must tone down the expectations in regards to landing these star players in the portal. In this new era, like you say, it is best to be smart and spend the money wisely on guys that fit. In the end, all these guys must compete as a team and money players can be more than a distraction from that goal.

Definitely possible! But their version of ROI might not be all about money or even wins but partially social status stuff that we wouldn't fully be aware of.

Idk maybe they all get bored of it but I have access to a chunk of the money of at least one family of billionaires and they have more money than they know what to do with. Constantly looking for things to spend it on and not all of it is brilliant investments

We need trench guys and we really need to beef up the offensive line. Just a quick search on the portal reveals this guy. Played at a good high school, a coach's son that has played at the lower levels. Would need to evaluate him further on measurables and character, of course, but he might fit the bill numbers wise since we need practice players. Probably could get at a bargain. There are a lot of these type players available and some might be chomping on the bit to get on the roster at the Capstone to rejuvenate their career.

If we get the guys we want this weekend .. then we good.

Awesome post. Also regarding Texas is how much booster politics generally intervenes in coaching decisions is historically and notoriously brutal.

Regarding Indiana, yeah they’re experienced/have some talent, etc, but do we really think they have more talent than a bunch of other blue bloods? Or is it culture and how that is more important than ever in an age of total transience.

there’s that famous Bear speech: give me the guy Thats a talent of 80 who works hard versus the guy that has more ability but doesn’t work as hard. Maybe if we get more of a bunch of solid, hard working players who don’t ***** in conjunction with the super talent we usually get that will get us back on track.
In other words, hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.

Or when that billion dollar booster starts to blame the coach because his 5 million dollar qb isn't playing. How many coaches might lose their job.
you had to wonder what was going through Yella Fella’s brain when Jackson Arnold, with a reported $1.5 to $2.0 million NIL deal, was told to “go take seat”.

In reality, that is our only hope. Then and only then can we get some sense of true market value for these players. From there, a program can reasonably make better decisions on NIL allocations to get the most bang for the buck.
