Link: Wednesday Thoughts On OL Room

Im asking around, but I want know how involved Grubb is with the Oline as it relates to his offense. During the season he was asked a question about what was he going to do to try to get the running game going. His answer caught my attention and Ive admittedly have been fixated on it ever since. He said "Ive done all I can do." That answer bothered me, because he didnt explain what he meant by that. So i started filling in the blanks myself with all kind of things he could have meant.

After watching Grubb for a year and seeing what he does. Theres just something in his "game" that doesn't give me confidence. But, if the new OL coach can fix the run blocking those concerns may be irrelevant.
You have to wonder if one of the catalysts for the Seahawks getting to the Super Bowl, was firing Grubb and getting a good OC.

Not quite accurate. (And this may seem like I'm picking nits. So be it.) Clint said HE thought there might have been interest (From Jones?) but that Alabama didn't express interest.
Just from internet chatter, it seemed Klemm was the main target to begin with. His son played for DeBoer on UW's 2023 team. Or thats what I read. I didnt get the sense they really pursued anyone else. But, Im STILL HEARING they may not be done hiring an OL coach. They maybe hiring another OL coach to help.

Would love to see Vlachos brought in as an additional OL coach. Pound for Pound he may have been one of the best in the Saban era.

On the subject of personnel I feel like we did ok in the portal. I think the house cleaning was necessary just to utterly reset the position. Hopefully a different expectation will be forthcoming. I am worried about center. We got an experience guy from Cal Poly but he's not terribly big and didn't face the level of beast he would see here. Sometimes guys can adjust sometimes they can't. Brailsford for instance never really was able to deal with some of the SEC linemen size and strength. But it's more about ability than size. Some guys just have a gift.

I'm not totally in on the issue with the run game being Grubb's fault. For one he called plenty of running plays but they went nowhere and usually resulted in us getting behind early forcing him to throw the ball to catch up. It's been said and it's true that to win at a high level you have to be very very good at either passing or running and be at least competent at the other. Every offense from every OC has this as it's goal. Sure being great at both would be preferred, but it's rare. I think you saw it with Indiana this year and even more so from the 2020 Alabama squad but most of the time you just don't have enough to do both. But again, great at one and competent at the other is what every OC is aiming for. Because that balances the offense, prevents the defense from being able to focus on one thing only and keeps the whole play book open for 60 minutes. Grubb certainly would have LOVED to have had that situation. You can see early in games he really wanted it to happen. In fact the only game he got his wish was against Vanderbilt and it's probably the reason we won that game since it kept Pavia from throwing for a million yards on us. Add on top of that the fact that Ty Simpson was hurt half the season and the whole QB run game which I believe is a staple of his offense was out the window. There were just a LOT Of things that went wrong this year. Some were out of their control. Some things may have been due to how they handled things in practice. They just need to find the right balance. but more than anything else they need to find the linemen who want to be the man in the room and lead this team from the front. If they do that all these other distinctions will fall into place.

I'm not understanding why people wants former players to come back to Alabama to coach. If anything I don't want Vlachos to come back. He needs to go somewhere and continue to grow as a coach at a schools other than Alabama.

Depending on the source, he's 2 inches taller and 15 pounds heavier than Brailsford. I guess we'll know when roster weights come out, although I think our current staff isn't really putting the true stuff out there (i.e. Brailsford was likely smaller than listed, and Procter started the season way bigger than listed and they put his aspirational weight on the roster).

Totally agree with the level of competition being a concern. He did kinda dominate the level he was at so even if he's slightly less effective against the level of competition, that might bode well for him.

If CKD is going to hire another OL coach to work with Klemm it will probably be as an assistant OL coach. Vlachos played to the Bama standard under Saban with a mean streak. If we happened to get any NIL slackers out there during practice I would bet on Vlachos to get it corrected quickly. I don't know the guy but mean streaks have a way of sticking around. The more angry hair on fire coaches we have the better IMHO. I'm just so tired of our lack of a run game these last few years.
