Lou Holtz has passed away 3-4-26

He's always referred to as Lou Holtz. Not Coach Holtz. Not just Lou. Not just Holtz. But always Lou Holtz.

I think it was his 2nd year at South Carolina when someone asked how close were they to playing for a national championship. He said: "I don't know. How far away is Athens, GA?"

Remember Coach Holtz roaming the side lines in those black coaches shoes, to me his most unforgettable victory was at Arkansas in 1977 upsetting Oklahoma in the orange bowl, very motivating and inspirational speaker, prayers to his family, he will be missed

Many folks aren’t old enough to remember when Holtz left N.C. State to coach the NY Jets in 1976. He resigned with one game left in the season after winning only 3 games. He said something like “God didn’t put him on this earth to coach pro football”. 😆

I think he was pretty open to saying it was the biggest mistake he ever made in his coaching career.,

I remember vividly taking his Arkansas team to the Orange Bowl in 1978. Holtz had suspended three of his players, two of which were starters. Switzer and Oklahoma were huge favorites. Arkansas absolutely dog walked them 38-6.
I remember before the game they were huge underdogs and he told the media "I guarantee you that we will move the ball on offense, it just may not be forward"...

I had some connections to Arkansas through my family moving there while I was in college. Underrated state and really, really great athletes. My family and friends went nuts over the Orange Bowl win... it was Bryantesque. He has to be among the 3 top collegiate coaches of his era.

True story (I think): While at Arkansas a player of his beat up a student. Not a great feat for a big, athletic player versus an average size male. Coach Holtz called him into his office and asked him if he was guilty as charged. He said yes with no remorse. The Coach then wheeled around hit him square in the jaw, knocking him off his feet. The Coach then said to him, "If you do anything like that again you will be packing your bags. Now get out of here."

The player supposedly took off running and never caused a problem again. Not sure you could get away with that coaching style today.
