Who's watching the World Cup?

I gave it a shot and lasted about a half hour. Still the most unwatchable, boring sport around. The Ocho had a roofball tournament that was far more entertaining (literally it’s dudes throwing a football at a post on a roof and catching it in the way back down). Glad some of y’all are enjoying it, but I don’t get the appeal at all.

Extremely weird and soft rule.
Not if you are aware of the kind of stuff many of the players are subjected to around the world.

The level of racism some of them face in many places is beyond the pale.

It was so bad years ago that fans would toss bags of feces and urine at opposing players.

There’s nothing wrong in my mind with attempting to limit racism and abusive language on the field.

It’s a PF and 15 yard penalty in the NFL to use racist or abusive language and can also result in ejection.

There’s no place for it in the stands or on the field.

It’s not about toughness, it’s about right and wrong.

I would need to watch some videos to know what offside is. You explaining it does not translate for me. I dont recognize it in hockey or soccer.

Its almost like you are saying that you cannot run a give and go play to the goal...

There have to be two defenders (typically the goalie and another defender) between the player receiving a pass and the opponents goal, and the player receiving the pass has to be “onside” (meaning he is even with or in front of the defenders…meaning closer to the attackers own goal than the opponents goal) of the second defender at the time the ball is passed to him).

It can be confusing especially now that the rule is you can be off even if only one of your nose hairs is behind the defender.

Part of what makes soccer confusing is that many of the rules are basically purely judgment calls by the referee.

The again, FIFA is about as corrupt as any governing body can be and is you combine that with the fact that more than half the calls are judgment and the game is ripe for cheating.

I certainly understand folks not getting soccer. I was the same way until a German exchange student I met in college explained the games we watched together. I taught him to be a Tide Fan and showed me European Football. Then I lived in Europe for quite a while and it got in my blood every bit as much as College Football. I got my son into it and he played competitively for a time and now we share it together. They call it the beautiful game and it really is if you know it and I feel blessed to know it and really enjoy it. But I definitely know what it is like not knowing the sport.

For as long as I can remember, my Dad had college football on the tube Saturdays and NFL on Sundays. My Mom, she never understood football. She simply did not care to watch it. That was my story early on with soccer. One simply just has to care to understand it. Now is the perfect time for someone to get to know the sport of soccer because the best players in the world are playing right here in our back yard, the largest and arguably best tournament there is. But if you don't care to know it then no sweat. But man, some great action going on in the World Cup right now.

He covered his mouth while yelling at another team’s player opposing player that wasn’t a “friendly” conversation and was given a red card for it. No idea what he said, and the opponent is going to take advantage of the situation and get a player ejected.

This isn’t urine, feces, or being in actual danger. The player was ejected because the opponent pointed at him and a replay showed him covering his mouth. Way too subjective a rule with a very drastic penalty.

Is FIFA more corrupt than professional boxing? If so, wow...
