Lindsey Graham has died

That's one I've never heard, but it sure is funny.
I can absolutely see him doing that.

I've devoured about 10 different books now on the 1968 Election for the Polls thread. I only thought I knew about that race. Almost everything we've ever been told about it - almost all of them rise to the level of myth or at least distortion or "filtered through the lens of the activists."

One consistent thing, though, is LBJ undercutting Humphrey at every turn until the final ten days or so of the campaign. There's even a video out there (I can't seem to find it right now) of Mondale and a few other big Democrats from the time frame saying they weren't sure LBJ wanted Hubert to win until the very end.

But over and over, it was like LBJ was Donald Trump with the loyalty test. Humphrey would say something, LBJ would come right out and say he couldn't promise that. When Hubert put the tiny little gap of stopping the bombing as "an acceptable risk for peace," LBJ didn't even like that even though it was really the only option he had to shake up the race.

Then again, Biden kept snorting to Harris "no daylight, kid," and she was supposed to defend every single one of his policies as the right thing to do, even if she disagreed with it. While I understand that a VP is saddled with the record of the predecessor, you still have to give them some wiggle room. "I agreed with the President on the goal of X, but the way I would go about accomplishing that is (list what you'd do differently)."

Reminder: these guys can't imagine a world without them running it, and they're shocked to suddenly discover the world goes on without them.
Kennedy appointing LBJ as VP had the feel of "Keep you friends close, your enemies closer." I dont think I have read enough about the methods of LBJ.

Am I bad person, when my mind leapt immediately to the Senate and what this and McConnell's condition does to Donald J. in that Chamber? "SAVE" is even further out of reach and he has indicated he will almost pull the whole house down, if he doesn't get it...
temussolini is claiming that lindsey called him last night and told him that they had a path for "save"

According to Theodore White, JFK went to bed and had knocked his choices down to Stuart Symington (Missouri) or Henry Jackson (Washington - I seriously wonder how a Catholic-Jewish ticket would have been in 1960).

He came down the next morning and told them LBJ was his choice. Everybody from the union folks to Bobby to pretty much every northern Democrat lost their minds. But hey, he needed LBJ to ensure he won Texas. White finishes with, "he did not plan to die."

I suspect your assessment is probably correct in at least some form.

Of course, I thought that's also why Obama put Hillary at State, too. Alexander Haig warned that anyone who wanted to be President should never be Secretary of State because that person is expendable in a foreign policy debacle - and has to take all the bullets for the President. (To be fair, I DO think that a lot of that went by the wayside later, and he was no doubt in favor of her succeeding him eight years later when the time arrived).

And we get it again.

"We're not like Trump, he's cruel."

Exhibits cruelty after hypocritically condemning it.

"But what about....."

No - you're a monster by your own mouth, leftist idiot.

I'm with the Tom Nichols school of "you shouldn't celebrate it, but you aren't required to mourn it, either," which as UAH has pointed out today is a Darrow-ism.

It's not your ideology - it's the fact the left and the right are made up of HUMAN BEINGS, not miniature divine greatness. There really is no difference whatsoever between Scumbag Trump saying he's glad Mueller died and this. No, she didn't "have a good reason."

Lindsay Graham wasn't exactly OJ Simpson regardless of what people thought of him.

Is she talking about Graham or the IDF commander who was directly targeting children in raids who got killed.

Was this IDF commander on TV a bunch the last 48 hours giving interviews? Because she said that as the follow up, but I can’t post it here because she was responding to a tweet with a word that I can’t post here.

And when someone else mentioned Graham being pro-Israel, she doubled down on the karma claim.

Without Vietnam the legislative accomplishments of LBJ would place him high amongthe most successful Presidents. Regardless where we come down on him we can say that he knew the all of levers of power in Washington and wasn't afraid to use them. I believe it was attributed in saying that "Texas would go Republican after the enactment of his Civil Rights Act." In retrospect the change was much more far reaching than that.

She has a habit of being hypocritical. Cenk has made her less unhinged over the years but he has no control over her social media.

Think Tubby says something like this if Chuck Schumer died?

Note-I don’t know if LBJ actually said what I quoted above but I could see him doing it.

That said, if I was Doug Jones, I would pay AOC money to say “Doug Jones doesn’t support the proletariat and I cannot in good faith endorse him”.

Just to be clear, several Democrats today that are in the US Senate have made very excellent remembrances of Senator Graham. Klobuchar’s was touching and Booker had a great one as well. Cory Gardner had a nice joke - and thankfully, most of them didn’t have the usual caveat about how they didn’t agree on much with whomever.

It’s not about you.

I wasn’t even aware of Graham‘s backstory and all the assistance he provided his sister, who was essentially orphaned at a young age.

I wasn’t even aware of the IDF thing until you mentioned it, but I did go back and look since I have no desire to misrepresent or be unfair to anyone.

And for the record, even if someone posts something distasteful like, for example, during the Charlie Kirk assassination, I honestly don’t think we need to go on a termination spree and have everyone fired. It might be appropriate if you work in healthcare.

My larger point is that there are scumbags all across the aisle, not just on the right. The right fixates on “law and order,” meaning any of them guilty of obvious crimes should get double the condemnation. The left focuses on “compassion,” so I should be able to expect a little less of the “glad he’s dead” comments.

Wanna know where I first heard of Howard Stern? When a bunch of liberals were crying in the fall of 1992 about Stern making comments like, “Chuck Connors is dead. Good, l hate him. Hated his show.” That’s the average person on social media nowadays.

We have become dead to things, and that’s not good.

I agree with your assessment. LBJ washed away genuine accomplishments with Vietnam.
Nixon did the same with Watergate. No, his accomplishments weren't quite as large, but he didn't come into office with a 68-32 Senate and 295-140 House, either, did he?

(This is why I roll my eyes at the claims FDR and Lincoln were the greatest Presidents, the simplistic thinking involved. Give ANY President the control Lincoln had when the South seceded, and you can do all kinds of things with no Congressional opposition. Same with FDR, who had a 69-25 Senate after the 1934 midterms).

As far as the supposed claim of LBJ about "we've lost the South for 200 years" or the countermyth of Republicans saying he said, "I'll have those N-words voting Democratic for the next 200 years," we really need to get away from anecdotes as evidence of anything, EVEN IF THEY DID SAY IT. Humphrey won Texas in 1968, and Carter won it in 1976. Plus, Nixon PROBABLY would have won it in 1960 without LBJ, and nobody outside of AOC can try to seriously argue Nixon would have won in 1960 because of backlash in 1968 (which didn't help him win it that year, either). Eisenhower won Texas twice and Hoover won it back when it was solid Democratic territory in 1928.

I'd say Johnson was accepting reality that, yes, included the CRA, but there was a LOT more to it than two civil rights laws, too. John Tower won LBJ's seat in a 1961 special election and became the first Republican elected by the people to a Senate seat in Texas. Nobody with a brain can say, "Tower won in 1961 because of laws signed in 1964 and 1965." Plus, everyone had their eyes on this new Congresscritter from Houston, a man who worked well with both parties, so much so that the Democrats did not even put up a candidate against him in his 1968 House race.

Sadly, we never got to learn how far George H.W. Bush could go in Texas politics......

Idk I listen to them every now and then, and i remember them making a big deal about not celebrating death but her turning on it with the IDF commander’s death. So I instantly thought that was what she was talking about, but no she was talking about LG’s unquestionable loyalty to AIPAC. Cenk even made a dumb joke about the death by saying Graham is meeting Hades and trying to get him to get Zeus to go to war with Poseidon or something.
