I’m lumping it in with other situations.

Team Captains throwing tantrums at midfield and kicking football, brawls with AU on National TV, Talty showing his rear after missing a kick.

Nobody ever gets publicly punished or misses playing time.

Lack of effort on gameday from week to week to half to half to qtr to qtr.

For me there is just a lot of on and off the field issues that don’t scream that a tight ship is being run.

That’s jmo the optics aren’t great.

I’ll feel a bit better if/when it’s announced that Suttles has been relieved of his duties post haste.

Suttles wasn’t given that position under Deboer nor was he given the unlimited amount of access under Deboer. He basically became the go to source for the average Alabama fan once Cecil died and the university has given him a crazy amount of access that only guys like Rodney Orr would have. My point is I don’t know how I could link the on field product to Suttles arrest. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t post it on the FB board

Whether it’s them or someone else there wasn’t enough due diligence done in letting him be so involved with program.

You really can’t predict what someone is gonna do most times.

I know we’ve had stuff on CNS’s watch too like Sark’s addictions and more on topic Lane’s predilections but in the past we had more green flags than red ones.

Who are the red flags on the staff? Im not aware if anyone on the staff getting in trouble with the law. I see a bunch of coaches trying to do the best they can in this era with the resources they have to build a winning program. We can debate the effectiveness of their approach but I dont see character flaws within the coaching staff.

We had way more coach character flaws on Saban staffs than we do now. That is certain.

I agree with you. The bottom line is that winning buys a whole lot of forgiveness / forgetfulness.

Steve Sarkisian (he wasn't sober his whole time at Alabama. I can't tell you how I know, but I know without a shadow of a doubt.)
Pete Golding -- DUI
Bo Davis -- relatively minor recruiting violations. The godamighty stupidity was lying to Saban.
Lane Kiffin / Joey Freshwater -- young girls and booze, possibly related issues. There's a reason Saban fired him between the national semifinal against Washington and the final. To be clear: I have no reason to believe any of the girls were under 18. If that's true, it wouldn't be illegal. But it wouldn't be the way you'd want an Alabama OC to behave.
Scott Cochran -- pills and booze....together.
Lance Thompson -- all sorts of shady stuff mostly (not exclusively) related to recruiting, most of which would be perfectly legal today.

Over the course of their 30 or so months in Tuscaloosa, I'm not aware of anything like any of that from DeBoer's staff. I'm not naïve enough to think that none of them have done anything untoward -- these are 30 and 40-somethings making mid-six to low-seven figure money in a testosterone-fueled environment with all sorts of temptations coming at them from all sorts of directions -- but if a few do fall to temptation every now and then, they do a much better job of being discreet.

Or at least, they have so far.

If you're on the Alabama football staff, you're never more than one drunk, stoned, randy, or just stupid night away from being a headline.

Thing is, after the 2007 re-set season, Saban and his staff almost never lost to an inferior team. They won a bunch of rings, both national and SEC, and a lot of other hardware. You do all that, and your shortcomings are forgotten.

DeBoer hasn't won any hardware yet, has lost a couple of games to inferior teams, and has gotten totally dope-slapped in two of our last three games. You do any of that, and every shortcoming you ever thought about having will be under a microscope.

Because lemme tell you - folks talk and THEY KNEW. They knew for years, and so did he.

Remember, when it came out all over Paterno, they were gonna let him finish the year.

Because they'd just gotten ranked again, he was 8-1, and their only loss was to #1 Alabama.

People still hold Wimp Sanderson in high regards and still tune in every week to the Roundtable to hear what he had to say. Nowhere near Paterno level but it’s odd that some of the same people who still actively hate Kiffin never say one thing about Wimp for doing something probably worse.

Not to derail this but wasn't Sanderson's 'sin' having a long-time affair with his secretary culminating in a battery charge? I was at Bama at the time and that's what I remember, but I didn't really follow the story past what was in the news at the time.

Seems like Kiffin's 'work' was far more dangerous for the University and its reputation. But I'd be happy to be corrected.

But the fact that he was her boss and this was going on for a long time made it a bigger potential headache for the university than the simple fact that he allegedly struck her. Think about how many qualified people were passed over or how many other staffers could have been given preferential treatment because of her. It’s more in line of the Bobby Petrino case but all parties found a way to make it go away through settlement.

I think the SEC Basketball Tournament was held in Birmingham in 1992. In the past, Wimp had always gotten Nancy Watts a room at a hotel near the venue. According to what I heard, Wimp was ending or had ended the relationship. Wimp didn’t reserve her a hotel room here during the tournament and she didn’t take it very well.

There was a confrontation the next week in Wimp’s office that led to Nancy walking away with black eye. Her story was Wimp slapped her. Wimp said she started to hit him, he raised his hand and “accidentally” struck her near her eye.

The University ended up settling and Wimp lost his job.

Not a good look but ultimately it’s probably the least unpalatable situation being discussed.

I wasn’t overly familiar with Sanderson’s indiscretions or alleged assault but that’s obviously bad too.

It’s dumbfounding how a guy who has found himself in a privileged position like Suttles with a Wife and young kid at home just decided to solicit the services of a Hooker.

Not just a Hooker mind you…. A $100 Hooker.

No telling what kind of STD’s he would have brought into the home.
