0-15 After the Third Quarter?

Would it be too much just to ask for at least one win when trailing after the
3rd quarter or better yet let's try and get ahead after three quarters where Shula's record is 22-1.

Trailing After The 3rd (a little perspective)

There's been a lot of talk about CMS being 0-15 when trailing after the 3rd quarter. I don't see what the big deal is. I understand that it would be great to win one of these, but you'll see that teams are much more successful when they are leading after the 3rd rather than trailing. I can almost guarantee you that the percentages aren't very high for any of the top programs in the country.

Let's look at some numbers from THIS season (I was bored last night) ...

** SEC Coaches are 3-18 when trailing after the 3rd. Only Urban Meyer (1-0), Mark Richt (1-0) and Sly Croom (1-4) can claim a win. All others are a whopping 0-14 ... Mike Shula (0-2), Les Miles (0-1), Ed Orgeron (0-4), Houston Nutt (0-1), Rich Brooks (0-2), Steve Spurrier (0-2) and Bobby Johnson (0-2). Neither Phillip Fulmer nor Tommy Tuberville have trailed after the third this season. In the three wins: Florida was down 17-14 to Tennessee, Georgia was down 13-0 to Colorado and Mississippi State was down 7-3 to UAB.

** NCAA Top 10: No teams in the Top 10 (except for Florida and Georgia) have trailed after the 3rd this season.

** Major Football Schools: Outside of the SEC, the only coaches that can claim a win after trailing to start the 4th are Bobby Bowden (1-1; FSU trailed Miami 10-3), Frak Beamer (1-1; Va Tech trailed Cincinnati 13-12) and Charlie Weiss (2-1; ND trailed Ga Tech 10-7 and Michigan St 37-21). Other coaches of note: Joe Paterno (Penn St: 0-2), Mack Brown (Texas: 0-1), Dennis Franchione (Texas A&M: 0-1), Larry Coker (Miami: 0-1), Bill Callahan (Nebraska: 0-1) and Dan Hawkins (Colorado: 0-4).

After the severe sanctions Alabama has endured, most teams would barely be competitive at this point. The fact that we play as well as we have is a direct result of good athletes and good coaching.

THE SKY IS FALLING!! THE SKY IS FALLING!!

This looks much worse than it is. Here are some comparison stats (since 2003).

When behind after 3 quarters:
Alabama's record: 0-15
Auburn's record: 1-7
Florida's record: 2-6
Arkansas's record: 1-17
Ole Miss's record: 2-18

When ahead after 3 quarters:
Alabama's record: 22-2
Auburn's record: 33-1
Florida's record: 27-5
Arkansas's record: 19-1
Ole Miss's record: 14-4

Overall score in 4th quarters: Bama 266 - Opponents 165

Alabama has "lost" only 7 out of 42 fourth quarters since 2003.

I'd say these stats don't look so bad, especially given that this is about the worst possible 3 year period you could compare given the probation effects...

There's nothing to see here, nothing to see here... Everyone please move on to the next doom and gloom thread. You should be able to get a page or two of dire posts in before someone decides to finally take the time to do the research and provide some context.

Thanks for the research and the post..i feel a bit better now!

More generally, I think that this thread demonstrates that 4th quarter comebacks are pretty rare things. I guess I need to re-think my football TV watching strategy of koncking back a few cold ones in the first quarter, falling asleep in the second quarter and waiting to really engage in the game until the 4th quarter starts and the beer starts to wear off.

Not only are 4th quarter comebacks rare but they will become even more rare with the clock changes the NCAA has put into place this year. There will not be enough time to make a comeback now. I really hope they change that back after this year.

Here's another interesting stat I found while compiling numbers from rolltide.com: We're undefeated when leading after the fourth quarter.
Oh wait... except for 1993.

I vote useless stat.

W:mad: hen I saw that on T.V. i curled up in a ball for about 5 mins.

Actually, I believe that is referred to as the "fetal" position..:biggrin2: :BigA:

I'm sure someone here could begin a thread with an even more obscure stat if they put their mind to it. But please..don't.:)
