Alcorn State hires Jay Hopson

"I don't see black or white, we're all purple and gold," Hopson told reporters after being introduced.

Have you ever been to Alcorn State? I have. It is in Jefferson County, Mississippi, which is 86% Black - U.S. highest, and 4th poorest county. The university is the jewel in the county, as students come from all over. No doubt, a tough place to start for Coach Hopson. I wish him well.

It's interesting. Last Fall, I was REALLY bored and was watching Norfolk State (which has always been a historically black college) play another HBC on a Tuesday night. NS had a white QB and actually a number of white players. I was kind of surprised. Times change, I guess.

Preaching alert!

We are going to start replacing racism with excludism (something of the sort) some time this century imo as all the races will become minorities. Any organization of any race that looks like it excludes people that are not similar will be exposed as excludist! Historic value will only get you so far. At some point racial national organizations will become taboo for everyone imo. It will be seen as a double standard and against the ultimate goal.

The most discriminated person in the US is a not particularly attractive overweight female of any race. This used to not be such an issue, but as we have turned into a Serving/servicing economy, it is a much bigger deal.

They take advantage of the minority scholarships offered by those schools. Ever seen a HBC baseball team?

Absolutely..plenty of white students at HBCUs. Like you said, they go on minority scholarships. And it's not like they're in a position to discriminate seeing as how the basis of each of their existences were due to discrimination.

My cousin just finished up as Stillman's all time leading tackler. He had plenty of white teammates during his tenure. And Stillman's baseball team has plenty of white players

my brother got his undergrad from Southern University (hbcu in Baton Rouge). He went because it offered an Air Force ROTC program.

As someone who actually went to an HBCU they take advantage of everything that offered. Yes there are minority scholarships but that's not all. I'll just be glad when things like those are not needed. I applaud them for the hire. Winning is winning no matter who it is. This shouldn't even make the news other than just a normal hire, but any time race comes up we bite at it. I went to Bama State. I hope they drag the field with them. But I hope he does have some success.

That reminds me of Sly Croom getting to MSU - "Maroon is the only color that matters."

Alabama State has several white players.

Alabama State has gotten to where white kids don't get minority scholarships. As with the Alcorn State hire, just one more positive step.

I will be glad when all of this does not matter any more.

And for all the racists....they should be required to sleep in a foxhole in a foreign country somewhere with a person from a different race. My experience is that this is a cure all for racism.

A few years ago Miles college won their conference title in baseball. So Fairfield, the city where Miles is located, decided to invite the teaam to a city council meeting to give them an award. There was an article in the paper about how shocked the all black council was when the Miles baseball team walked in and it was all white guys.
