2007 Alabama prospects discussion and articles

My guess - he has every intention of going to Bama, but, wants to drum up a little intrigue and generate a little hype for himself. I can't say I blame him... if he just comes out tomorrow and commits to the Tide, a lot of people just see him as "Andre's brother". If he milks things a bit, and plays up the other schools wanting him like Florida, USC, etc. he can really build his own hype and be seen as a major prospect in his own right (which he is).

But, yeah, I think he ends up signing with the Tide. Going anywhere else would have been like one of the Britts or the Castilles signing elsewhere.

Class of 2007: Mobile, Alabama is loaded with talent
The city of Birmingham was the hot-spot for Scout.com's top prospects for the class of 2006 with Andre Smith, Deantwan Whitehead, David Ross and Tim Hawthorne. This is Mobile's year to showcase the talent.

The early prediction for the top player in the state is a toss-up between McGill-Toolin defensive end Sidell Corley and B.C. Rain athlete Elliott McGaskin.

Rashod Henry has said that Alabama is his (very) early leader right now. He is a DB/WR out of Lumberton High School in Mississippi which is Terry Grant's high school. He says Grant has been working on him to come to Bama and right now his two favorites are Alabama and Florida. Says he wants to stay close to home.

He is 6'0, 195 lbs, and runs a 4.29 40.

BOL has him @ 165lbs. He's still "gliding stealth" at anything sub 4.4.

Doh, yeah, me made a typo. Hit one key too high there. That is why I would never make it in accounting.

I dont really think this is a good thing as Alabama traditionally does not recruit Mobile well. Perhaps this year will be different if we concentrate our efforts down there. Do McGaskin or Corley have interest or ties to Alabama?

I think Corley is a barn lean (I am telling everyone, the guy is overrated).

Anyways, the reason Bama does not recruit well is because of the prospects connections. For example, Chevis Jackson went to LSU b/c he is friends with JaMarcus Russell. Mobile, while it is closer to FSU and LSU than Bama, is still a HUGE Bama city. It just depends on where the prospect feels more comfortable.

here's a few thoughts.........

for years Bama DID recruit Mobile extremely well,(Mccants,Samuels,Condon, etc but a few things happened along the way. mainly probabtion! as expected schools like L.S.U. and aubie were able to take advantage of this situation. plus, aub had done fairly well for years due in large part to Joe Whitt. with his departure,BIG mistake on ears part imo,i see us returning to prominence in the region! i believe that the Mobile region, which includes Baldwin and surrounding counties,Clarke,Monroe, and Escambia......is the most talent rich in the state! look at the roster and you'll find that coach Shula has picked up the pace in our area,(Jeremy Clark,Preston Dial,Wallace Gilberry,B.J. Stabler,)just to name a few.

Scout lists McGaskin as a Bama lean. I dont know how good he is but he has a cool name.

Corn Biscuit- Have you seen this guy play?

Yeah, I played with the guy. He transfered because of his grades, though. I do think he has good potential.

Also, I dont have anything against the kid. I wish him the best of luck. Just my opinion. ;)

A couple of caveats about the class of 2007 (#s, etc)

First, we are not going to be able to sign that many. Sources range from 13-18, based on a degree of possibilities.

Therefore, we are going to lose some in-state talent to out-of-state schools and, yes, the Barn. Do not panic at this sight. We are going to be selective, and we'll get the majority of what we want the most.

Many people were extremely worried over the lack of DTs and LBs we signed this year. Well, this class should have plenty of both. Several kids at both positions have received letters from Bama and their interest is returned. I can think of 2 good in-state DTs who we have very good shots at already. On the LB side, I don't think it could look much better early on, as a couple of out-of-state LBs are heavily interested and about 3 in-state kids are heavily interested. There will be more.

Rolando McClain and Caleb Thomas in Decatur

Has anyone seen these two play? I watched Rolando play against Athens earlier this year and both are listed on Rivals for 07. Are either of these D1 material? I would love to see bama sign a big strong linebacker.

I think the theme for 2007 will obviously be quality not quantity. We need to shore up our depth in several key areas. LB and DL will obviously be our main focus. Other than that, I think we'll go after the best athletes we can get.

Any LB would be crazy not to give Alabama a hard look right now. They'll have an opportunity to come in and contribute right away.
