2020 NFL Combine

You know it's always fun to watch these guys try to reach those 40 records and we're always hyped when someone runs a sub 4.3. Same with any other drill. We're always like "OMG, that guy jumped 50 inches". But, if you look at the list of people that have combine records, how many of those guys made it to the pro bowl. Just a little perspective. Jerry Rice ran a 4.71 40 yard dash. The 40 is one of the most overrated drills in the history of football.

While you are absolutely correct, it's a big hit with the fans and it makes some of these kids a good bit of extra money...and Rich Eisen raises a ton of cash for charity because of it. That alone makes it worth the time...Run Rich Run!!!

Tom Brady has the slowest time at the combine . That worked out pretty well. But, with the new emphasis put on speed in today’s NFL, fast guys will be a premium moving forward. With Hardman and Hill, KC just proved that speed kills! Well, plus a great QB

Jerry had field speed that was pretty much unmatched. I don't have stats to back this up but I would imagine most WR's running 4.7+ don't make it in the league or don't stick around long so it is not quite as overrated as you would think.

I saw somewhere that Hopkins and Michael Thomas both ran somehting like 4.57 at the combine. They're 2 of the best WRs in the NFL.

That said, speed can still kill. DeSean Jackson and Tyreek Hill are 2 of the best recent(ish) examples of what speed at WR can do for a team.

How about Jarvis Landry?

"Jerry Rice ran a 4.71 40, but the greatest receiver of all time couldn't be caught in the open field. Jarvis Landry ran a 4.77 in 2014 and has put together consecutive 1,100-yard seasons. "
