... a roast of Holmes featuring Tex Cobb. So I punched in Cobb's Wiki page, ...
Holmes declined a rematch with Cobb because his hands couldn't take the beating
... Cobb? "I'd go another 15 round with Holmes if it would get Cosell off of "Monday Night Football.""

... Tex Cobb was the resident celebrity at one of the places here in town, back in the late 80's

... I remember the first time I saw him up close, I thought; that is a LARGE man :D

He had one of the best swings ever on the tour. If his passion for golf was at least close to Nicklaus, Player, and Palmer he would have been one of the all time greatest. Rest In Peace.
His passion was there earlier in his career...but repeated failures wore him down. Mentally he could not compete with the greats...a nicer version of Greg Norman who usually folded in the clutch. Also, TW said that alcohol ruined his career and nearly took his life.

Former boxer Earnie Shavers, 78.

He was born in Garland, Alabama.
Didn't quite realize that he was from Alabama. Always remembered his hard hitting. If he tagged you, it was Goodnight Irene.

I wouldn't call her death tragic. She was 96 and died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. I'm sorry she died but let's keep things in perspective. Her reign is noteworthy because of how long she lived. She was just a very popular figurehead. Now there is an unpopular figurehead on the throne but it isn't going to affect the lives of the people in the UK much at all.

Totally agree...enjoying a life of luxury and dying at 96 is not a tragedy...there must be millions who would have traded places with her.

Bernard Shaw Ex CNN host dies. No love lost for CNN but back when he was around, he always seemed level headed and professional. RIP
What I'll say about Shaw is the same thing I said about Cronkite, Reynolds, and Huntley-Brinkley: you DID NOT KNOW (at least not for sure) his political affiliation. He was respectful to those he interviewed, he didn't try to insert himself (usually) into the mix, and he didn't try to be controversial to make a name for himself (a la Dan Rather).

(He also buried the hopes of a President Dukakis, for which we should all be grateful, but he did so by letting Dukakis hang himself in the answer to his question, too; besides, Dukakis was going to lose anyway by that point, but I digress).

I didn't know - not during his prime - that he was in the Marines (the Internet wasn't a big thing back in 1991), which explained to me his authoritative voice intonation, and he also did a great narration for CNN's Desert Storm video collection, too.

I recall that he announced his pending retirement DURING the Florida recount debacle in 2000, and thus he missed out on the chance to cover the 9/11 attacks which went to Aaron Brown...on Brown's first day at CNN.

Not gonna lie, I could watch and listen to Shaw deliver the news all day. The late Don Harrison, too, also of CNN.

Her reign is noteworthy because of how long AND THE TIME DURING WHICH she lived. She was just a very popular figurehead. Just a slight alteration - because the fact she was alive during that big world war was kind of a big deal even if she wasn't the one calling the shots.

It's so bizarre for me; when I lived in England in 1977 (her Silver Jubilee year), the British press was wanting her to step down so Charles could reign, but the tabloid story at the time was that he wasn't married, and they didn't want a bachelor king. Then, it was he needed a male heir, etc, etc.

Personally, I'm glad she never stepped aside, even if he wasn't a walking tabloid.

I think her uncle soured her on the idea of abdication. Unlike the Netherlands, where retiring monarchs is a tradition.
