Alabama: 2023 Defense Discussion

Good news for the D this year........we have an experienced DC and we won't see our undersized MLB getting lost in the mass of linemen, leaving the middle completely exposed.

Hit the nail on the head

I believe scheme will have more impact than anything.

Since Saban took over, what always appeared to be the case to me is that when people did their jobs, everything was fine, but assignment busts often lead to TD. There have been more busts in the past few years than ever before. I believe that has been because of "over scheming", creating confusion for the players. All we've heard this offseason is been about being more sound, keeping it simpler, etc.

Its never been about talent. When you are playing lost, you don't play well. So I'm hoping to see a defense that has limited penalties and plays fast and sound. I think the rest takes care of itself.

Well, Eboigbe and Oatis look to be NFL material. Will have to wait and see on the others.

Developing the people already in the program is the key. During the Dubose years, it seemed that every year we had a freshman come in and win a starting spot pushing older players on the defensive line down the depth chart. At first I thought that it was great to be getting more talented players every year, but when it kept happening, I came to the conclusion that we simply were not developing the players already on the team. My hope is that with CKS calling plays and pushing them, the players on the defensive side of the ball will live up to their potential.

We lost a quality LB to Arkansas because he couldn’t crack a similar lineup. Marshall, if he picks up the defense, should be the best run stopper Bama has had in the middle in a couple of years, and Campbell got experience last year.
I’m not worried about the defense at all. Now I won’t say I don’t have some jitters about the DC, because there’s good and bad there. But those will go away after the first game. Or not.

Didn't know where to put this post. Listening to jimmy stein. Apparently Middle Tennessee State is one of those teams that throws the ball as soon as the ball is snapped. That crap is so annoying it drags the game out then you have people overreact about a lack of sacks and yards giving up.

Oh we will be fine. I am confident of that. It's just really annoying as a fan to watch.
Its also really annoying to have to explain every single year to worry wart Bama fans why you shouldn't expect a lot of sacks against a team that throws the ball almost as soon as it reaches the qb's hands.

Actually....

“(Sanders is a ) really good football player, play extremely well for us last year,” Saban said. “Had an unfortunate injury that, you know, held him back and he would have probably been a starter here this year and I’m sure he’s probably going to do really well, you know, where he is there at Arkansas.”

There was no need for him to transfer, he would've started at Alabama. I don't know if playing position was part of the decision or Sanders didn't know what Saban said.

Sanders made a rushed decision, I think. He had very little time to make a transfer happen due to our schedule and the transfer rules, etc so when he talked to Ark and they pretty much promised him the starting role at ILB he took it before ever really talking with our staff. Had he stayed, I think it was very likely he would have had the same role (Mike) as he had at Ark and we would have slid HTT over to Will. It would have been a better fit for both of them.
