I think we have to realize that we are going to lose 60 to 70% of our roster each year. Our team is better when we are not focused on one player who has to score. Guys like that will demand 15+ shots per game. And what we need are six or seven guys take between five and 12 shots.
If Oats wants him, I want him. If we don't get him, I trust that Oats will find the right replacement. At the end of the day I didn't always agree or understand what Saban was doing, but I stopped worrying about it because I respected him as a recruiter, leader, and coach. Oats has grown on me over the years to almost that level. He has brought our team to a new set of expectations and standard. If he is good with a one and done, than I guess I am as well. I see the pro's and con's of a AJD type guy. I tend to agree with you and if our resources are limited it is smarter to tie up 4-5 million of NIL in 4-7 guys rather than just one, but I don't know the in's and out's of the payroll like Oats and company do.

**Edited to spell "Oates" to "Oats" to keep from being banned again

Seems to me the staff was convinced they had him, and BYU upped their offer at the last minute.
AJD either changed his mind or intentionally led us on so he could get better leverage for a better offer from BYU, once they caught wind that he was signing elsewhere. I tend to think he and his dad played the game. I think if Bama would have made a similar offer he would have signed with us but there is just no way we are going to come close to $7,000,000 for one player when we have future NBA prospects on our roster not making anywhere close to that. I don't believe our number was in the same ball park and we were selling him on development, more exposure (which could lead to future monetary gain), and a chance to win a championship. All great selling points and all valid. Unfortunately, I don't think AJD and dad cared about those nearly as much as him getting paid immediately. By stringing us along he got his extra 2-3 million and went where he was going all along even though he knows it is not nearly as good of a basketball school currently.

As long as we can suspend people whose username is misspelled...sure.
my username is spelled the way it is due to limitations on number of characters for usernames at the time. Spelling Coach Oats name incorrectly is just weird. Considering it is spelled out on this site multiple times, plus google exists, plus rolltide.com exists

Point has already been made. I'm a pretty good speller so I'll do my best moving forward. I don't spend much time on the basketball forum and have been off this site for over 10 years. We used to have quite a few good conversations when I went by Rasputin on here. I honestly wasn't familiar with how his last name was spelled or had forgotten, if that's weird then sign me up. Hope your day gets better fwiw.

Would it have been awesome to see our program reel in the top player in a recruiting class? Absolutely.

At the end of the day, Oats ALWAYS ends up finding his players. Whether its HS or TP we will be more than okay by the time 2025 rolls around.

HS recruits seem to be projects at this point in college basketball, your real roster fillers are in the portal. CNO knows that.

Agreed.

I'll take a Dalton Knecht, Mark Sears, etc over a one and done 18 year old. As long as we hit on a few Mcdonald AA's each year, keep developing the current roster, and add game changing pieces from the TP, we are going to be just fine.

you are not the only one that does it. Just reminded me of rival fans spelling Saban's name Sabin or Saben because they thought it was a sick burn.

Not to be confused with AuDub I'm far from anything but a Bama fan. If that is their intention, it is quite a dumb burn.
