Since saban has changed the defense to a 3-4,I have noticed alot of 4-3 still. So I was wondering which is better? and was wondering with the lack of depth which one we will use this year? any ideas thanks

Saban is a 3-4 guy. While we saw a lot of "4-3" looks in '07, it was basically a 3-4 with an OLB lined up on the end with his hand on the ground. I think Saban will stick with the base 3-4, just add variations in certain situations.

with the lack of depth,do you not think we would go back to a 4-3 defense,

I'm in favor of the 3-4 since I like the flexibility of changing fronts at will . Better disguises , more flexible , etc. . I will say that unless we can plug a true Jack into that position , I would prefer the more traditional 3-4 alignment & personnel .

I think we'll stick to the base 3-4. There may be some growing pains in the LB position though. The DL should be better, especially if Cody and Murphy make it to campus this summer. McClain is a STUD but possibly losing Hall and Knight will make the LB position thin, but we have a few talented RS guys along with Jerrell, Dont'a, and Upshaw coming in. If the DL shows improvement, it will only help the LB's while they are gaining experience.

I agree, the 3-4 can shift into 5-2/4-3/3-4 by just changing OLB to De with their hand down. I like the shifting D that can confuse the QB. That said, the change to the 40 sec clock may neutralize much of that advantage by giving the O more time to audible.:conf2:

Honestly I think it will depend on which of our guys are ready to play during the fall .... If we are loaded at DL then I think we will see more of a 4-3 and since our LB"s seem to be still thin it might be our best bet till we build some high quality to go along with RM and adding JH and JJ in there will give us a solid starting unit but we need depth if Zeke can't get back!!

Saban's defense is the 3-4, but he is versatile and we line up in a lot of different fronts from the 3-4 to the 4-3, 46, or 5-2; not to mention our nickel and dime packages.

I don't think that change is going to have much effect at all really other than to standardize the timing between referee crews.

Personally, I like the 4-3 but can tell that Saban is building a team around a 3-4 which I know will work over time as well.

It's not about the scheme as much as it is the players, and we're getting the right talent on the field.
