Not your favorite movies (e.g. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was one of my favorites, but I can fully say that it is not one of the best)....

I wanted to put a time limit on it to exclude the older films and Star Wars.

The Five Best Movies since 1990

1. Legends of the Fall - The only movie that I can think of that is both a chick flick and a "man's movie".

2. Shawshank Redemption - Can't explain it. Just one of the best ever in my opinion.

3. Dead Poets Society - There've been several attempts to recreate this movie - Mona Lisa Smile, The Emperor's Club, etc. - but this is the best "teacher making an impact" movie. "Lean on Me" was also good in that regard.

4. Silence of the Lambs - Probably my favorite movie ever. Anthony Hopkins could freak out a serial killer in his Hannibal character.

5. Braveheart - "FREEDOM!" 'Nuff Said.

I'll change my mind in a few minutes.

Hard to dispute that list, but I think some should be changed to include Gladiator and Dances with Wolves.

or this list:

1. Unforgiven (1992) - Clint Eastwood at this best. Best directing, writing and acting in any movie of the last 20 years.

2. Pulp Fiction (1994) - Great storyline, great dialogue and great acting.

3. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - One of Sir Anthony's best jobs.

4. Goodfellas (1990) - Timeless story with some of the best actors of the 20th century.

5. Field of Dreams (1989) - Since Dead Poet's (1989) was used, I took liberty as well. Not only one of the finest sports movies, but one of the finest movies of the last 20 years.

Can't argue with this one...

Although there are several others that could make the list.

1. Lord of the Rings - I will treat all three as one to make room for four more.

2. Gladiator

3. Braveheart

4. Pirates of the Caribbean

5. Shawshank Redemption

1) Braveheart--best movie ever IMHO

2) Forrest Gump-- has everything; comedy, tragedy, romance, war

3) Shawshank Redemption --I like Stephen King, and this is one time where I think the movie was better than the story he wrote

4) Saving Private Ryan -- Tom is the man!

5a) The Sixth Sense -- but only the first time you watch it, because I never saw that ending coming.

5b) The Matrix -- groundbreaking special effects when it first came out

1. Lord of the Rings - I will treat all three as one to make room for four more.
2. Gladiator 3. Braveheart 4. Pirates of the Caribbean - GOOD but not my #4) 5. Shawshank Redemption - Also extremely good (but ...)

MINE:
1. "TLOTR" (part-3,-1, then -2) As a work of literary fiction were considered by it's author to be THREE BOOKS-IN-ONE; so I'll call them ONE MOVIE AS WELL.

2. "Gladiator" is an incredible movie from the beginning Germanic battle scenes to the very end scene with 'Marcus Aurelius' embracing his wife & son in the after-life - - - Simply one of cinemas finest epic flicks!

3. "Braveheart" is another fine piece of epic cinema (as most of Gibson's movies are - especially the Patriot, the Passion, Hamlet, & Apocalypto).

4. "Cinderella Man" - As sports movies go, this movie has more heart & soul than any other sports flick I personally have ever experienced. Granted "The Natural" & "Field of Dreams" & "Hoosiers" are all extremely good sports flicks as well but this moving (& true) story is the better, IMHO.

5. (tie) "The Last of the Mohicans" & "Cold Mountain" are both epic war movies, though in very different ways, and love stories as well but isn't that what makes a story an epic? Day-Lewis & Stowe are very good in their roles but the film's cinematography is what really sets it apart. In "Cold Mountain", it's the story itself that almost hypnotized me during the course of the film with Zellwegger shining very brightly in all her scenes.

Heck, I'll just cheat & name 4 more to make it an even 10!!!

7. "Legends of the Fall" is to me Hopkins & Pitts finest film to date. There is something about Hopkins portrayal that reminds me of my paternal grand father which is worth a great deal, to me anyway.

8. "The Last Samurai" - I know Tom Cruise is a fruit loop, but this is far & away his most mature portrayal of all his movies. Ken Watanabe (samurai leader) is incredibly good & it's our misfortune that we don't see more of this actor in American films - a very fine actor!

9. (another tie) "Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" - As prison movies go, both are light years ahead of anything else done with this genre in the last twenty years. That aside, both are just really well acted & both weave stories well worth remembering as you grow old.

rhYno's Top 5:

1) Casino Royale - Arguably, the James Bond 007 franchise is one of the most successful and popular film franchises of all time. Casino Royale explored the origins of the legendary 007, covering all the basics from why his elegant tuxedos are always tailored to perfection all the way to why he considers women as "disposable pleasures rather than meaningful pursuits." Seeing a stone cold government killer suddenly transform into a broken hearted lover really sent a tear of sadness down my cheek. Everything about this film is perfect: The acting, the directing, the writing, the beautiful scenery, the score, etc. etc. Very seldom do you see everything fall into proportion for a film the way in which it did for Casino Royale. * * * * *

2) Batman Begins - Whether you proclaim to be a DC fan or Marvel fan, there's no denying Batman Begins is one of the greatest comic book films ever to hit the silver screen. Christian Bale did a splendid performance in taking on the role of Bruce Wayne as did Michael Cane as Alfred, Liam Neeson as Ah Ras Agul, Cillian Murphy as "The Scarecrow," Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes, Morgan Freeman as Lucious Foxx, etc. etc. I've never seen a film portray a comic book story to perfection the way in which Batman Begins did. The sequel to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, will definitely be a must see, but I can assure you it along with any other comic book film premiering in the forthcoming future will ever top Batman Begins. * * * * *

3) The Butterfly Effect (Director's Cut) - This would certainly be a heated debate considering it's third on the Top Five Films Since 1990 list, but there's never been a movie to tell such a depressingly good story the way in which this film did, and there likely will ever be another one. If you saw the theatrical version, you wasted valuable time; however, if you've seen the director's cut, then you understand the point I'm trying to make. TBE (Director's Cut) has the potential to be one of the most depressing film's ever made. The ending is a bit twisted, but the overall point hits you big time: For the ones you love, you'd do anything to make their lives happier -- even if it's having to give your own. * * 1/2

4) Titanic - I absolutely HATED this film. It's far from everything it should've been simply meaning it was overrated in my opinion. However, its success spoke for itself and the contribution in making this film was monumental. I won't give a star rating because I honestly thought the movie was sheer crap.

5) TIE: Gladiator - An outstandingly wonderful film * * * * -- Forrest Gump - Roll Tide Roll! * * * *

1. Lord of the Rings - I will treat all three as one to make room for four more.

2. Gladiator

3. Braveheart

4. Pirates of the Caribbean

5. Shawshank Redemption

Replace Pirates with Forrest Gump and you have a pretty good list.

Have you guys ever seen Seven???? That is one of the best movies ever.

I would also add Glory as a top 5 movie. Can you have 20 top five movies?

Picking just 5 is a real hard task. I could come up with a few replacements given enough time to really think about it. I did like Pirates of the Caribbean just a bit better than Forrest Gump so it made my list but Gump had the better sound track. Seven I don't think would even make my top 20 but that's just me and my taste in movies. Glory is an awsome movie and Gettysburg could easily be in my top 5.

no Jurassic Park?

Would make an honorable mention for me.

I'd also throw in the following:

-Dazed and Confused (my all time favorite film)
-Clerks (Selected over "Chasing Amy" due to the influence of the film)
-Requiem for a Dream
-Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
-Basically anything Pixar has done
-The Fugitive (Can't believe no one has listed this)
-The Big Lebowski (One of the most quotable comedies of all time)
-The Royal Tenenbaums
-Princess Mononoke & Spirited Away (The two best hand drawn animated films)
-Terminator II: Judgement Day (Extremely influential in terms of special effects)

A Goofy Movie gets an honorable mention from me.

My list would come from these:
--Amistad (loved the story! Sparked me to research the real story)
--When was Lonesome Dove done? Was it after 1990? If so, then yeah, add it.
--Saving Ryan's Privates. :D
--Bourne Movies (all 3 of them)
--LOTR (all 3, but 3, then 1, then 2 is the order imo)

the exiled young'uns vote for the SAW movies. I'm too old for such intensity myself. Or too much of a pansy, perhaps...

exiled

(Oh, I almost forgot: Napoleon Dynamite. /sarcasm)
