THE LSU Game Breakdown

I will try to explain the strengths and weaknesses on the upcoming BAMA v LSU game.

Here is a little history On LSU This Season.

LSU's Pass defense got spanked by Arizona State to the tune of close to 500 yards. They had over 600 yards of offense against them. LSU is good - but IMHO their Pass defense is suspect. Not only did LSU let ASU throw up and down the field on them - they also made Casey Clausen look like an ALL American.

What’s more Florida and Auburn while not having huge days number wise they passed on them as well. Leak is having a horrible year and Cox while he has some talent he is not Brodie. Did you see the VANDY v LSU game? Cutler when given time was able to slash their defense - granted that was not much but still it happened.

If you go troll the LSU boards (tigerdroppings.com) you will quickly find out that the LSU fans have serious doubts on Bo Pelini the LSU Defensive Coordinator.

People can point to Utah State and Mississippi State getting pressure on Brodie all they want but the fact is that against Tennessee we were able to keep Brodie untouched in the 1st half. UT has perhaps the best front 4 I have ever seen in college football. ALL 4 will be playing on Sundays.

Granted with adjustments at the Half UT was able to get to Brodie in the 3rd and 4th Quarter but the fact remains that UT had ZERO Pressure on BAMA in the 1st half.

If you will humble me I will tell you how I think it will go down.

In the 1st half Alabama will give LSU a steady dose of Either Darby on the ISO Dive or The Slants run by DJ, Brown, and ZEKE. It will depend on what the LSU OLB's do. If we read a blitz by their OLB's then we will throw or if they set back we will run. If they only blitz one and shift over into a cover 2 shallow Zone we will more than likely run the play as called - 60%-40% Run Pass Ratio.

We have to run the ball – If we have over 100 yards rushing by halftime we will be in the lead. If we have over 175 yards rushing for the entire game we will win.

In the 2nd half LSU will make adjustments and decide to do the opposite. If they have been blitzing then they will start to sit back or Vic versa.

The key to the game IMHO is not the O line – I think we will be able to give Brodie 3 seconds - no the key will be if DJ, Matt, Zeke, and Brown can catch the slants. Also if we are able to connect on the backside deep out pass pattern. If we can give Brodie 3 to 4 seconds without a blitz (and I think we can) then LSU will have to bring the backside Corner or OLB on a blitz. This will allow us to throw the deep out and LSU will loose inside containment on our WR’s thus allowing for curl’s and Slants.

If LSU cannot get pressure on us with their front 4 the game is over. Their DB’s are not good enough to shut us down one on one. If they have to blitz then that will leave guys open or in One on One coverage, most likely Walker the TE or Tim Castille as well as LeRon McClain and Darby coming out of the backfield. I expect to see a lot of the draw plays like what Jimmy Johns ran against Mississippi State up the middle as we will take the aggressive rush their DT's and DE's use and turn it against them.

It is important on the time we are able to give Brodie. The mistake that most people make is with the Blitz. If you can get pressure on a QB without blitzing - using just your down 4 guys (in a 4-3 defense) then that leaves 4 DB's to cover and 3 LB's to read the run pass. Tennessee was not able to get pressure without blitzing the LB's or CB's and it cost them.

Brodie has missed on a lot of TD passes lately. He missed on 2 wide-open TD passes that we should have made against UT and Mississippi State. However in the UT game if you watch the long pass to DJ at the end of the game UT was in single coverage with the Backside OLB blitzing. The CB and Safety had to respect the Slant, curl, etc because the LB was not there and thus let DJ break outside containment.

Brodie will have to have a good day and the WR's will have to catch the ball but If UT cannot get pressure on us without blitzing then there is no way that LSU can (even without JB Closner). When they Blitz we need to execute Plain and simple. We need to make the right read and we need to give Brodie 3 seconds and Brodie needs to make a accurate throw and then we need to catch the ball.

On Defense we just need to do what we have been doing. We are fundamentally sound. We have to have a big day from our DE’s. I think we will play a lot of the 3 – 3 – 5 this week like we did against Florida. LSU can be more of a passing team – Their bread and butter is with the run however – they are not like UT or Arkansas with a power running game - They use more of an attack style that we do. I think Our defense will play mostly 3-3-5 and wait on LSU to make mistakes. We will set back and play sound fundemental defense. For LSU to score they will have to put togather a 13 play drive.

We will not try to force anything until LSU has a penalty and then watch out. We will come after Russell with a delayed blitz. I don't think we will have a lot of QB pressures but the ones we do have will be on 3rd and long. I expect LSU to be able to move the ball - much like Florida but in the same fashion as UF they will stall as they reach our 30. We will have a shorter field to defend and thus will be able to blitz more. I would not be surprised to see us hold them to somthing like 3 field goals.

If LSU stays true to form they will have 1 or 2 turnovers and about 15 penalties. That is when we will stop them. We will play conservitive and let them make mistakes. We will stop them on Defense and play field position with them. When we get a turnover and flip the field on them we will open it up with play action and go long. We will try to move the ball on Offense. I expect most of our points to come on LSU turnovers however.

I think LSU will come out strong – but I doubt they score in the 2nd half. I think as the game goes on and we make our adjustments we will be better and better. I am not worried about the Defense or Special Teams. We will respond in both of those areas and I look for La. native Chris Keys to have a good day on special teams.

I think the O Line will step up and deliver just good enough of a performance and the WR’s will have hands of glue and Brodie will be on target. These guys know that if they win Saturday they are VERY CLOSE to making their dreams come true.

One thing I can promise – Those young men will lay it all out on the field. When the game is over there will be no doubt if we played our guts out. Don’t forget that this team feels like it should have won at LSU last year. The 2005 team’s mission is not done yet and they know it.

LSU is a very good team but they can be beat. I expect us to win if we execute and to me it will come down to Brodie and the WR's not the O Line. I might be wrong however - we will see.

He brings up something I wondered about. How much will our beat down by LSU in 03 and defeat in what should have been a win in 04 will come into play mentally for the team.

Watching LSU I have yet to be impressed, but they still scare me. I have no logical explanation for it. I'm feeling better and better about this game as the week goes on though.

Thanks for posting TP.

Agree but also...................

I agree with almost all that was written here, but along with the protection for Brodie, the WR's will need to get some seperation.
I haven't seen very many times since Pro went down that any of the WR's have gotten much more than a step on the DB's.
This is fine if ya can make ALL those fantastic, remarkable HIGHLIGHT FILM catches, but that's lulling yourself into some kind of FANTASY game!
The WR's need to be really SELLING their routes also when were running, it'll help keep the DB's and Safetys off until he gets past the los!
I also think the TE over the middle or on the drag will open up the run a little more, also would slow down those aggressive LB's, just as much as the screens! Now of course thats JMHO!

Then again thats why I'm here and not on the coaching Staff!

One thing that gets overlooked by the national media in their damnation of Alabama's offense is the fact that O has been moving the ball well. They're just not scoring TDs.

I truly believe at this point, it is more of a mental thing (along with timing) than anything else.

I think there is a possibility of us scoring quite a few points once we break that barrier.

I would not be surprised to see us score 27-30 points this weekend. And we all know the odds of LSU scoring that many on our D is not good.

Trenda, I agree. I will not be at all surprised if this isn't one of the best performances all year long by the O. I think they have the desire to make it happen this week, and that means a lot. I believe they expected to coast last week, and it showed up. The O line was probably mentally shaken by losing JB early, and that hindered too. Like you said, they've moved the ball just not crossed the goal line. I'm just wondering what long run or pass we will get to vote on for another $5k next week.

Also, looks like LSU has an injury situation on their O'line this week as well. http://www.shreveporttimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051109/SPORTS0202/511090318/1028

his worst game at florida

brandon cox
16-41 221 yards

11-33 113 yards

yes, ASU lit us up, as for reasons that have never been made clear, we decided to play 10 yards off the ball on every passing play. That hasnt happened since, and we have played well on D since. are we as good as 03? no, but the d has looked impressive since tennessee

i believe that LSU will do the same as miss state, and miss in that they will try to stop the run by loading up the box, fill the gaps with linebackers, and force brodie to beat them with the pass, which has not happened against those teams. you stop darby, and the offense is in trouble. even when darby gets his hard fought 100 yards it takes the whole game doing it. we have two legitimate receivers in hall and brown. we may get two or three deep shots a game with them. if they are overthrown or if they are covered we are back to the run. it has worked against us. i do believe we have the better defense, and that should be the difference and playing at home.

It seems that we have been moving the ball much better in the 1st half lately and then stalling in the 2nd half... We don't seem to be running as many of the quick hit passes in the 2nd half... Not sure if opponents are making adjustments or if we are just getting conservative....

I felt like last week after we went up 17, Shula got conservative (other than the 2nd int).. no passes over the middle... may not have wanted to get Hall or Brown injuried.... Shula knew MS would not score unless we gave them something...

I expect us to score at least 21 point this week...

I agree, I think our offence will show up because they know this is a huge game. We knew the Miss St was a must win but we also knew they are not a team to put up many points on our defence. We didn't have the urgency to run the score up. I have a strange feeling that our big play game is not lost without Prothro. I have a feeling Hall and Brown will have huge games, and Darby will eat clock the entire 2nd half.

IamNotWill, I believe you are absolutely right.

I also feel that our entire "hand" hasn't been shown yet...the coaching staff knew that MSU was not going to be a very close game, and I believe they called the plays rather conservatively...

I'm pretty sure that this late in the season we probably aren't going to throw anything at LSU that they aren't expecting after watching our last 9 games of film. However, I don't think we went ultra conservative against State just not to show our "hand". I think Coach Shula kept Brodie in the game running ground plays just to work on the Center-QB exchange knowing full well our Defense had Norwood and their QB totally contained. Coach Shula was fully irratated because of our Offensive ineptness about as bad as I've seen him long before we quit throwing the ball.

I agree that we win the game on Sat. It may be ugly, but I think the last 2 games we were playing down to the opposition. This week we rise up and play to our strengths, passing, Darby/Johns/Castille running and defense.
This is the week we pull for Georgia as well. A Georgia win gives us the west title.
Yes, I am homer, I believe the Tide will Roll on Sat. :biga:

I don't share as much optimism as the original poster does. I think this game is going to really test us on all 3 phases of game. If you look at the LSU roster, you will see full of blue chip talents all across the board. This game is going to be a real tough one and I look for this game to be just like UT's with a few key battles that we "must" win.

On offense it has to be our offensive line. We have to be better on inside runs. Our bread and butter is not short slant passing routes or screen plays to backs or TEs, but it's the play action pass - big plays that we used to make once upon a time. Our inside runs have gone bye bye since week 1 due to the inconsistency in our center and guards. We need to get better on that. If we can run well and force LSU to box 8, then we have a real good chance of connecting a long one off a play action. This is what Shula's offense is all about - Keeping the defense off balance with mixture of run and pass. Also our tackles need to step up a big time (especially our LT Capps). Our left side (Brodie's blind side) has been terribly inconsistent. The poster above mentions Brodie coulda / shoulda had a few TDs on a long bomb, but what he fails to mention is that every 5-7 step drops we had, Brodie's been throwing off of his back foot because of the pressure from the outside. You have to be able to plant your foot, step up and make the throw. Watch out for our LT as he'll be going against one of the best DE in the SEC.

Another key battle we must win is the field position. Our defense has looked vulnerable at times when they were given a short field to work on (that Ole Miss TD, our only TD allowed in last 5 games, came after DJ Hall fumbled the ball at our own 25 yard). LSU comes with one of the best returner in the nation in both punt and kick off while Alabama hasn't done anything in this department since we lost Prothro. I don't think people realize how important field position is going to be in this game. We have to keep LSU out of 50 yard line, period.

Next and lastly, the home crowd noise. This is probably the single most advantage we have in this game. When Jess posts his match up breakdowns I think people will realize how overmatched in talent wise we are vs LSU. We have to have the most amazing, loudest, craziest noise going in the BDS. LSU has probably been the most penalized team in the SEC. We have to help LSU keep that streak going. Crowd noise will make a huge difference - Just ask Florida or Tennessee. We have to be louder than those two occasions this weekend.

If we win those 3 key battles, we will win this game hands down.
