I was in the 7th grade. There used to be a show that aired on WTBS on Saturday nights called "Football Saturday on TBS," it came on right after wrassling or a Braves loss. They'd generally go over the college football results and preview the next day's NFL game. Anyway, Norm Van Brocklin was sitting there when they came back from a break and with a look of glee on his face and an Alabama pennant, that he proceeded to crumple and sneer, and the entire audience (remember, the show was live in Atlanta) cheered loudly.
I hated Van Brocklin so much for that that when he croaked less than two years later, I was happy. Yeah, I was a stupid 13-year-old. Then again, I didn't know at the time that he had been the Tech RBs coach under Pepper Rodgers in 1979, so okay, him pulling for Tech was reasonable.
But it felt like a hard kick in the guts to me at 11. I’ll look at the box score shows that we lost obviously because of turnovers. We had the yardage on them, 384-262, but I am guessing seven penalties for 84 yards means we had a couple of spot fouls for pass interference.
