ACC Football after week 8

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I’m a Tech grad, and my college buddies and I have been discussing how Tech can make the playoff without winning the ACC and we think the only path is either going undefeated until the ACCCG or dropping a game to NC State or Pitt and beating UGA. We don’t think losing to UGA and then in the ACCCG will cut it, even though it’s essentially SMU’s path last year.

I was in the 7th grade. There used to be a show that aired on WTBS on Saturday nights called "Football Saturday on TBS," it came on right after wrassling or a Braves loss. They'd generally go over the college football results and preview the next day's NFL game. Anyway, Norm Van Brocklin was sitting there when they came back from a break and with a look of glee on his face and an Alabama pennant, that he proceeded to crumple and sneer, and the entire audience (remember, the show was live in Atlanta) cheered loudly.

I hated Van Brocklin so much for that that when he croaked less than two years later, I was happy. Yeah, I was a stupid 13-year-old. Then again, I didn't know at the time that he had been the Tech RBs coach under Pepper Rodgers in 1979, so okay, him pulling for Tech was reasonable.

But it felt like a hard kick in the guts to me at 11. I’ll look at the box score shows that we lost obviously because of turnovers. We had the yardage on them, 384-262, but I am guessing seven penalties for 84 yards means we had a couple of spot fouls for pass interference.

Turnovers killed us in this game.

If there were ever a year for GT to knock of UGA it’s this year.

UGA has barely escaped multiple games.

They don’t quit and they are a solid team but no where near as good as Kirby’s best teams.

I still cannot believe he was ever on our radar as a replacement for Coach Saban.
My understanding, from one of the more reliable Alabama podcasts recently, is that Novell was never even contacted about the job: Only DeBoer, Sarkisian and Lanning were given a call. That’s info from elsewhere - I have no inside info. I do believe it’s most likely. Novell being a Sexton client is possibly how Alabama and Novell were linked.

I do know from public statements made by Byrne that he had been observing KD for months if not years. I also know from published articles, that KD had a contract from Washington on his desk unsigned for months. The money was not far behind what Alabama offered him. I.e., he didn’t leave for the money. IMO, he left for the stage and what the name would provide. Contrary to the thoughts of some he is a fierce competitor.

IMO, he is far superior to Sarkisian and has outcoached Lanning 3 times with far less overall talent. He’s likely the best HC in the country.

He is extremely smart. Alabama is again extremely fortunate. It looks like offensive recruiting is going to go through the roof if they can complete this year successfully and maybe even if they don’t. Look at the job they have done with Ty. The transformation just from the FSU game has been stunning. Much of that is Ty, much of it is DeBoer and staff, including Sheridan as a QB coach. IMO, Ty would not be the same player with the old staff. The kids had already seen it to some degree but now it’s plain for all to see, out on the big stage that Alabama always plays on when they are good.

How on earth did we lose to FSU. What an embarrassment

Not to be "that" guy, but Coach Bryant very nearly lost to Florida State (1-10) in 1974. And I was too young to watch the game or know about it, but I believe we were trailing into the waning moments of that game. And if Florida State had not taken a safety to prevent a blocked kick, I'm not sure we win that one.

How did we lose to Jawja Tech in 1981?
LSU in 1993, when we were 24-point favorites?
How did the same team that ran through that brutal gauntlet in 1999 lose to La Tech before it started?

I think one thing is that we got so used to not losing to unranked teams under Saban that we are shocked when the norms of CFB DO apply themselves to us on rare occasions.

Is that the Florida State game where there was a film crew in the locker room?

This one I think. Might not even be the right opponent but for some reason that’s what is in my mind.
