After 13 games we're 9-4. Let's revisit our thoughts and outlook on Coach Kalen DeBoer

Well, if you cant protect the pocket long enough for downfield routes, your QB makes the wrong read 50% of the time on RPO, and QB had limited accuracy in the intermediate passing game, then what do you do? What are you going to do, install the Notre Dame Box or Wing-T? That's what he is best suited for as QB. He couldnt run the wishbone because he wouldnt take the hits on the edge needed to sell those fakes.

The staff knew what they were walking into but they didnt know they would spot OU 14 points on lazy turnovers.

You worry if kids are gambling on their own performance...

Losing didn't surprise me, but looking absolutely pathetic was just more embarrassing than I was willing to deal with. I can't believe people wasted their time watching those dudes play like junior high kids. It's difficult for me to believe that a team can have such a large disparity between their best and worst performances without there being some shady crap going on. I've seen pro wrestlers with more consistency.

And this year should be a mulligan given what he was handed...

He should get at least three years. That is the bare minimum amount of time. I don't think you can accurately judge a coach and his ability to run a program in less time than that unless the wheels absolutely fall off. With that said, the OU game was so embarrassing that I stopped watching in the 2nd quarter.

Yes, I worry about where all of the money comes from to pay these guys the kind of money they are making. That's the thing about money- no matter how much most people have, it's never enough. I should add that some of the officiating seems highly suspicious. As I've always said, if they take care of the game, there will be plenty of money. If they take care of the money, the game will go away. I think it already has.

I agree 100% my friend & we looked more like a Coach Dubose or Coach Shula coached team..It was that bad..

Honest question for folks on this board who probably know more about schemes, tactics and playcalling than I do:

Are we 100% certain that DeBoer and Sheridan are calling zone read plays for Milroe? The previous staff knew he couldn't run it consistently. DeBoer is not a guy who has historically run a lot of zone read plays. His offense frequently has the "Air Raid" tag attached to it for a reason.

Is it possible that we are just calling designed QB runs with basically fake handoffs for eye candy, and that they are QB runs all the way? Obviously there are probably 6-8 running plays per game that are clearly straight-up QB draws or QB powers with no attempt at a handoff.

IMO, our running backs are getting about the number of touches they would get in a typical DeBoer offense. Haynes and Miller combined are averaging about 16 carries per game. DeBoer has often had one bellcow RB as opposed to a tandem, but that one RB will typically average 15-20 carries per game. Last season at Washington they averaged about 40 pass attempts per game.

Is it possible that we are supplementing 15 or so plays that would normally be short and intermediate pass attempts with designed QB runs because it plays to Milroe's strengths (theoretically)? DeBoer and Sheridan are smart enough coaches to know that the guy doesn't do well with zone reads or options.

I'm not defending this as a strategy or saying it's the right thing to do, just wondering if it's possible.

This thread was on page 8 before last Sat. night and is now at 16.

I haven't read the comments, but I still believe CDK was the right choice.

Ask yourself right now, if not CKD, who else is out there you would want?

Indy Coach? Na, one season does not a great coach make.
Lane? Ole Miss has 3 losses this season too!
Sark? We don't have that much money!

Who else?

My point, let this play out. He deserves at least 2 to 3 years and the only way I change my mind on that is us going 7-5 or worse next year.

Milroe's "business decision" to not tackle and instead try to trip the defender after his interception should have been enough to put him on the bench the rest of the game / season. He had the angle and the speed to make a tackle and ... didn't.
Made me sick. Reminded me of SCAM not trying to recover the fumble in a game in the NFL.

That showed me exactly what I thought about where his "allegiance" is. LANK to him means "looking out for myself."

I think he was the right hire, and there is some cancer in the locker room, but as far as offense philosophy, how many QBs he has had that run as much as they throw? He just doesn't have his QB yet, when he does I think it will take off

Its not false. When you see, in person, Milroe sitting next to CKD at basketball game talking it up two weeks after he is hired, you know there is no open competition. You cant show that kind of favoritism in an open QB competition.

But if he's your guy, you probably go to a basketball game with him, hell you probably even catch a movie or two with him as well.

Ok, so that is what you consider proof...?

You stated "CKD named a starting QB before ever seeing the team practice."

Where did he "name" Milroe as the "starting QB" before Spring Practice started?

Should be pretty easy to post a link if that really did happen...

One thing that is becoming obvious is that DeBoer just doesn't press the right buttons to motivate our guys to play lesser opponents. The players don't need additional motivation to play teams like Georgia and LSU because they know those are big games and are already motivated. Saban rarely lost to unranked opponents because he got after the guys hard in practice during the weeks he felt they might have a letdown.

I remember former Saban players saying that Bama practiced harder during the week then NFL games are. I wonder what current players say????

Saban (and Kirby to a degree) are the significant exception. Carroll, Stoops, Meyer ... when they were all near the top of the sport dropped games to noticeably inferior opponents. Every coach out there tries to avoid it, but that is obviously much harder than it appears

There is a bigger contingent than I realized of Bama fans who want Deboer fired right now. He frustrated me to no end at times this year, but firing him after a season is just begging to set the program back. We really would end up with another Shula if that happened

Ridiculous talk. Firing him would be a very awbern thing to do.

Not aimed at you, but anyone calling for his job is simply posing and trying to stir the pot...

I don't know the number that has said that, but I think they are probably posting it on FB. I"ve only seen a few say that on here.

I agree it would set the program back and, as I asked upthread, who would be better that we know we could get???

It's obviously not as simple as saying he doesn't have the right QB, but he doesn't have the right QB.

JM has thrown for less than 2500 so far. Penix threw for 4900 last year.

We don't need a guy who can run well and pass mediocre. We need a dart thrower who can deliver the ball to our skill players.
