Alabama Coach Accosted leaving Pressbox

I agree and fan behavior is particularly bad in our own conference.

I understand people having a passion for the game and their team, but the behavior has gotten way out of hand.

I think the internet message boards play a role in these fans getting so worked up over a game. Think about how emotionally "worked upped" people get on message boards during the week. We argue, shoot blistering insults at other fan bases that frequent the board and all it it does is push friendly bantering into all out hatred. Then when Saturday gets here a large of majority of the fans rush to the game hoping their team wins because of all the smack talk that's been going on via the internet all week.

The internet changed a lot of things...

Do you really think that a majority of the fans have been reading message boards the week before? The math of what I know of board traffic wouldn't seem to support that, no matter what it may seem to us BB inhabitants...

Normally it's not the majority throwing cups, giving the finger, spitting or wanting to fight. But rather a hundred or so fans in a crowd causing a disruption for the majority. I wouldn't go as far as saying a majority of fans read message boards but we do know that just on this site a lone that it reaches well into the hundreds daily and many of them attend the games.

I'm not saying it is the sole cause but I believe that these message boards have definitely changed fan interaction between schools.

It all comes down to a total lack of respect... Assaulting the staff, throwing garbage, yes, even stealing car magnets - it's all just classless and I'm afraid this sort of thing is becoming more and more widespread in sports.

It happens on the field also (lack of class), it's refreshing to watch TG score and hand the ball to the ref without doing the gansta/thug routine. :)

Roll Tide! I am new to this site; and after reading this post the only thing I will add is whoever did this is a clasless(drunk) who is a complete idiot! You know when u start drinking @ 9 in the morning and more than likely throughout the game... this is the end result!

Throw the SOB in jail!

ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!

All I know is that most of our coaches can without question take care of themselves in that type of situation. I doubt very seriously other Ole Miss fans would have let it get out of hand and I KNOW Bama fans would have stepped in had it been needed.

With that said, in the words of Doug Lewellen (SP) "don't take matters into your own hands, take 'em to court.":p_wink:

I agree, it seems to get worse and worse. Some people need to realize that it's NOT life or death! (Even though it may feel that way)

Yes it has gotten worse and worse. Eventually it will end up like European soccer. Their fans have slowly brought "poor fan behavior" to the point that people are being killed, then it does become life and death.:frown:

Unfortunately, I believe this is a microcosim (sp?) of our society. I work at a boys home and had to sit all our guys down yesterday and try to explain to them how to handle themselves with class when watching football game. Not because of what happened at the Bama Ole Miss game, but because they can't watch a game and cheer for their team. It actually becomes a way to "get at" the person cheering for the other team. Rather than just cheering for their team doing good they want to provoke the fan of the other team. I explained to them that it is possible to watch a game with a rival fan and still be friends afterwards. Good natured ribbing is far different from provocation and that's a line that many fans often cross. It's just a game...I love the game...as do most southerners...but dang, people need to chill out and handle themselves with some dignity.

The only game i attended in oxnard was '93. swore i'd never return and haven't! at the end of the game the ole .... players started a fight and tobie sheils got slugged. a whiskey bottle hit a sideline guy for abc and he had to go to the hospital. without a doubt the most classless fans come from the "harvard of the south". there's irony for ya!

You're exactly right. My sister was home from LSU this weekend and she wanted all of us to get together and first watch the Bama game then watch the LSU game. So we cooked out and had all the fixin's. Well, my sister just starting dating this guy who's 23 years old. He graduated from Tennessee and was coming to the cook out to meet our family for the FIRST TIME. My sister told him WELL IN ADVANCE that we were HUGE BAMA fans and was very passionate about our team.

Long story short during the Ole Miss/Bama game this guy (keep in mind is meeting us for first time and is in OUR HOME) starts openly cheering for Ole Miss to pull it out while saying "They've got to win I can't stand Alabama."

Nothing was made of it. My family never said a word or even acknowledged it happened. But my sister was infuriated (though she's not a Bama fan) and after the Kentucky/LSU game was over she ended his stay and sent him on his way. It's the younger generations that simply have no respect for anyone or anything. And it's in every fan base ours included.

FANS or people in general are'nt the same today I've read so many on here advocate booing the other team. I've always tryed to show class and if your Team is doing what its suppose to do take care of buisness on the field. Kind of the walk softly carry a big stick syndrome, walk around with that little smile says I beat you. Cause I'm one that don't like to lose a game coach PB always said show class. Also I like what coach Saban said about the fans after the Georgia game.ROLL TIDE :BigA:

It's sad because...I'm part of that generation. I'm 23 years old...but my dad went to Bama when the Bear was there and I had a step dad who was a die hard Bama fan who taught me that Bama fans should carry themselves with class. I've also grown up with friends that are Auburn fans and we learned that we could take stabs at each other and still be friends and enjoy the game and everything. But you're right...for the most part my generation has no respect for anybody or anything...class is not even top 20 on our priority list...which is why I believe what I'm doing out here in Houston is so important...because it's not just about football here...we're talking about life. People must learn to respect other people or society will begin (or continue) to steadily degrade. Anyways...sorry for getting all deep but seeing those guys go at each other yesterday just stirred something up in me.

These folks are so young that their only recollection of championship football involved "the Icky Shuffle" and UThug winning the title in 98. What I'm saying is to act like you've been there before. Where are the mommas and daddys who would whip yer a%& for acting like that in public?

They don't do that anymore. They put them in timeout. "Whippin's" don't work and timeout is better.

One thing to remember about some of the soccer "fans" (and if you want some real insanity, look at Argentina or Brazil) is that teams often represent smaller geographic areas and are relatively close together. As such there are plenty of gangs that basically just identify with the local side. It's not like many of them were fans first who then became thugs. They were thugs who then became "fans."

The SEC may be the closest US equivalent, in terms of the degree to which individuals connect personal identity with that of a team. That said, I suspect that the geographic and demographic layout of the US is such that it would be hard for the dynamic to reach the same point.

Not tthat this is worse than getting punched, but someone stole an Alabama magnet off my jeep. Now if that is Alabama or Ole Miss, that may be another story. Ole Miss fans did not reflect well today with regards to class, or lack thereof.

I never leave my magnets or flags up during the game (home or away) for this very reason.
