The Dreamland in Mobile had to start offering sides, like slaw and beans, because The Brick Pit, Whistle Stop and Dick Russell's were running them out of business.

Dick Russell used to have a blackened fish of the day and BBQ platter that showed up at the table like a Mardi Gras float.

Ribs and white bread? That's it?!? C'MON, MAN.

Ever since Big Poppa passed away Dreamland has been on a steep downhill slide. There are better ribs at 2-3 locations in Tuscaloosa where they literally reject the ribs that Dreamland uses because they have practically zero meat. The sauce is the same but that's it. When people ask me where to get the best BBQ Dreamland is never mentioned.

Dick Russell barbeque is awful.:BigA::BigA::BigA:

I am not saying Dreamland ribs are the best but it does depend on where you buy them. The ones in Huntsvile are better than they used to be. I like Archibalds in Tuscaloosa. My own in Huntsville.:BigA::BigA::BigA:

I'm from Mobile, but have lived in Memphis for the last 15 years. Folks up here know a thing or two about pork BBQ. In fact the last 4 Presidents have stopped in for ribs from The Rendezvous, which is only the 2nd best rib joint in town.

The Irony:

1. Rileys putting up Ribs v/s Oranges, and Alabama is the #2 state for Obesity. ( thank God for Mississipi so this state won't be dead last in everything except for football).

2. Riley is fighting tooth and nail to keep out the bingo machines, yet he takes a wager, a bet, which is gambling.

What a load. (Riley)

About a mile south on I-65 on Cottage Hill Road is Fletcher's, they beat them all. You could make a meal out of the sauce and the crusty rolls.

They should have made the bet really interesting.

If Florida won, then Alabama's governor would have to run around for a week in the Pork-n-Beans project in Miami dressed as a hooker with a bag of crack.

If Alabama won, then Florida's governor would have to run around for a week in a Lee County trailer park dressed as a ewe carrying a six-pack of Meister Brau.

Dreamland ribs are awful.

You sir should shut your mouth. That is heresy on here....

Agreed.

And also,

Dreamland ribs were absolutely incredible back in the early 90's... but yes, they're awful, now-a-days.
Ewok you are right. Dreamlands is not what it used to be. And as far as the Gator listen up and get educated. Dreamlands is/has been no where near as good as it used to be for yrs. Back when the Old Man was still alive and kicking you couldn't find better BBQ in the SE, way back when it was just a shack in his yard. They were some of the kindest people you would have ever met and fill up some of my fondest earlier memories of BAMA football and going to games with my Dad. We stopped in down there all the time whether it was game day or not and they always treated us good. The decline of Dreamlands started directly after his death as his children fought over the business constantly a couple of them spent the $$ away, they went wild with it. Eventually they ended up selling the name and it has changed hands a couple times since. Back in the day the ribs were so good all you wanted was the ribs....you didn't need any sides just the ribs as you couldn't stop eating them. I like Archibalds now but I never bad mouth Dreamlands as I fear the Old Man coming to get me from the grave. The fact of the matter is that Dreamlands is not the same Dreamlands it is all commercialized now so if you haven't ever eaten the real Dreamlands like in the late 80's early 90's, then you have never eaten the REAL Dreamlands BBQ and you have most certainly missed out....RIP Old Man!!! and ROLL TIDE!!!!!!

Gold's in Atmore is better than Dreamland. Dreamland ribs may not be awful, but there are too many other joints that are better. In Mobile, I'd ather have Saucy Q's or Rodger's. I have had great BBQ all over but these places are within 50 miles. The Bama governor should have put up some Priester's pecans or Conecuh sausage.
Oranges are good but come on. Maybe they should have wagered Florida coke against Alabama crack.

I've eaten Dreamland ribs on more than one occasion. The first time was late 80's and they were good enough to do again later. Second time was in Mobile. That was the last. Mr. Dreamland (Bishop) had a son in prison. Goldsmith from Atmore taught a cooking school there. Bishop's son said Golds were better. Saucy Q's in Mobile were better back in the day compared to now. In alot of your cities across the south, the best ribs are were you go in and pick them up. There may be a small place to eat inside but you might wanna consider leaving the area and just eatin em in your truck.

Another good place is Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur, AL. He has a pretty tasty white sauce....Although since Dad has retired and does nothing but cook now, he has about ruined me to eating ribs. Hard to beat his so I rarely go out for ribs anymore.

I've never eaten at the one in Decatur, but I have eaten at the one on Bob Wallace Drive in Huntsville. It was so horrible that it rates as the second worst excuse for Que that I've ever eaten. The name associated with that awful meal has kept me away from any others that have the name Gibson's attached. :puke:

It has been a while since I have eaten there like I said I rarely eat ribs any other place than at my Father's. But the last time I ate their it was really good....I wonder what the deal is with all the BBQ places in H'ville. The Dreamlands there on University is also HORRID...last I heard they shut it down due to the place being way under code. I got sick from eating there and never went back.
