Game Thread: Alabama @ Mississippi State

I know I've harped on this plenty, but I can't help to think Norris would have been critical last night.

Am I wrong?

Yeah, I really thought that 3 petty hit was going to get him going. He followed it up with a really bad decision with his deep 3. You don’t shoot a heat check until you’ve knocked down at least 2 in row. We made some really BAD decisions down the stretch. It really hurt us when Giddens fouled out. We had found a mismatch inside.

CAJ needs to take the green light away unless they're wide open. I think the worse thing to happen to Petty was shooting 8/13 from behind the arc vs AU. That was obviously an outlier performance but he tries to duplicate it every game. Petty is actually pretty good at driving the lane and creating. He's got to add more diversity to his game other than jacking up 3s..

The thing is we turned down some open shots. I think it’s time to have Petty come off of the bench. I would almost rather have AJJ start along with Sexton. I love having 2 PG’s on the floor at the same time anyway. However, that does take away some of our length on defense.

From a personnel standpoint I feel like we have the same problem we've had from sometime now which is we don't have pure shooters or anyone who can consistently make the defense pay for clogging the lane. In college, because of the narrower width of the floor and the fact that defenses can play zone you almost have to have some 3 point specialists. Otherwise you run into the issues that we're having which is teams just let us shoot 3s because we can't make them and then they pack the lane which hurts our ability to score in the post or get an offensive rebound. It's an issue for a lot of college teams deal with so it isn't singular to our team. I'm just not sure how much changing the lineup will help since most of our players have similar ability - good athletes who can drive the ball but most can't consistently make outside jumpers. Not sure how to fix that this year other than hoping some of our shots start to fall..

I think you are right.. Norris wasn't a glitzy player... but he played hard-nosed basketball wasn't afraid to dive and get dirty.. one of his most underrated abilities was his solid man-to-man defense... while we have a good defensive scheme, our individual man on ball defense is atrocious at times... footwork and communication on defense is even worse... I too can't help but Wonder would that effort have helped us win one or two of those close games we lost

I don’t know where we rank but we just turn the ball over too much. Even with our poor % on 3s, we would have won most of the games we have lost if not for the sheer amount of turnovers.
