Alabama or UAB

This has nothing to do with football, but I have been accpeted to Alabama, UAB, and William Carey. I haven't received scholarship to Bama, but UAB and WCU have offered me. Plus I'm trying out for WCU's basketball team. I'm looking for some advice.

That's a VERY personal thing

There are a lot of personal factors that come into play here and IMO, you have to go with the preponderance of factors that are most important to you.

1. I'm assuming you've visited each school and have some idea of what life would be like at each one. Remember, you have to live there (or very close to it) for 4 years. Which did you like best?

2. Money-is this an issue for you (and your parents)? Can they afford to send you to Alabama? Is the scholarship money enough to totally cover the expenses at the other schools or most of the expense? If the scholarship offers only cover enough to where your parents (and you) are out roughly the same amount of money, it seems to me you should go to which school is your #1 pick. Money talks, no doubt about it. If your mom and dad are strapped and a school offers you a full ride, that's a very strong incentive that you would have to really consider. Have you tried for any scholarships at Alabama? Bottom line, the amounts of money being bandied about IS a big deal.

3. Academic reputation-this is a big deal, especially if you want to go on to grad school or possibly move to another part of the country. I don't know which program you're interested in but you probably need to do a little research into which school has the best reputation in the field/major that you're interested in. I will say that Alabama, while not Harvard, has a fast improving reputation and in a number of majors, has a VERY well respected name. Furthermore, for better or worse, the University of Alabama has widely recognized "name" across the country. I'm partial since I AM an Alabama alum but I've found that when people ask me where I went to school, I generally get a positive response.

4. Distance from home-This may or may not be a big deal. Is it a big deal being far from home? Only you can answer that. Is being able to get home quickly a big deal?

Bottom line, think about this carefully. It's an exciting time for you. Congratulations!

Think about what type of campus environment you want to be in for four years. Traditional campus, closed off campus, or downtown-city campus?

UAB is a good choice for anything related to the medical field, plus some of the pure sciences. I believe they have a pretty good EE program, but don't know much about any of their other engineering majors.

Alabama, on the other hand, has a great business school, a good fine arts program, and a well-respected college of engineering.

I personally prefer the campus at UA to UAB, and the town of Tuscaloosa to Birmingham. It's fun to be able to go out at night and walk around the quad and smoke a cigar, or go out there on Saturdays and chuck a football or frisbee with some friends. And I liked being able to wake up a half-hour before classes and still make it on time, and I lived pretty far from campus.

Night-life wise, it really depends on your style of bar, although Tuscaloosa DEFINITELY has more per capita. If you love the college/sports bar atmosphere, Tuscaloosa is the place to go. If you like the occaisional piano/martini yuppie bar, then there are none (to my knowledge) in T-Town. Of course, the two are a reasonable drive away from each other, so when we wanted that type of bar we'd just drive to B'ham and stay with a friend.

Basically, unless your major is in something that UAB clearly outperforms Bama in, or unless you are really accustomed to the amenities of large-city life, I'd go with Tuscaloosa.

Carey's hoops team is fun to watch, & according to alum friends who played, fun to play on. Run, run, run...it's really exciting. And I like H'burg just fine. However, I'm a Bama grad (multiple times!), so I'd echo what others have said. It really does depend on major, money, & environment desired.

Good luck! Wherever you go, you're about to enter a huge season of life. Enjoy!

My major is business management. I plan on going to law school at BAMA though. Thanks for y'alls replies

If that's the case, then you want to go to UA for business. Undergrad is now ranked in top 50 nationwide...plus you get to go to bama sporting events :) And the campus atmosphere at Bama has to be better than the other two.

Scholarships are great, but whatever you spend on tuition at UA will be greatly rewarded. Get a student loan.

Regardless of what you choose, congratulations & good luck!

Between loans, grants and part-time employment, you won't need a scholarship to go to UA. If I were interested in business and hoped to go to law school UA would be my hands-down choice. If you want it you can find a way to make it happen.

Good luck to you.

Ok, here is my take on the matter. In my opinion, you should do your best to stay OUT of debt during your college career. This means to take a scholly and not a loan, if you have that option. Loans are great for individuals who need them and do not have the option of a scholarship. If you decide to go to UAB or to WC, consider doing your first couple of years at these schools and focus on applying for scholarships from UA during this time. If you are going to law school after undergraduate school, then your choice of business schools becomes far less critical (if your GPA is above par and you take the proper elective courses), although I believe UA's business school is a top notch choice.
