Alabama oversigning?

Let me clarify that I wasn't saying Dee Hart was tranferring. I don't know either way. JustNeedMe81 had him listed on his "transferred" list, and I was saying that he hasn't transferred as of now.

Now, with that said, there has been some rumblings of Dee transferring for several weeks, but I don't know if there is anything to it. After the rumors started, Kenyan Drake asked on twitter a few weeks ago if his followers thought he should change his number from #17 to #1 or #7. That added further speculation to the rumor, and when Drake was asked about Dee, he said he "forgot" about Dee being #1, and dropped the subject.

"Oversigning" is something that Big 10 morons made up to try to slow down the success of the SEC. It's not a real thing and you can not have more than 85 players on scholarship, period.
 
Won't quote it - but everyone just read Chop's post and copy that to your other board. He is spot on No one outside of the UA athletic dept and the NCAA knows exactly how many we have on scholarships or which year we have counted the EEs to. That is the way Saban rolls. If they (other fans) don't like it - they can send him an email. 😉
 
Folks, no program can "oversign". The limits are audited by the NCAA every year. 25/signing class, 85 total at any given time max for FBS schools. Period.

Are there ways to sign more than 25 players within a 12 month period? Absolutely. But that would mean that some of those 25 apply to a previous class that fell below 25 for some reason.

So, no, Alabama does not oversign, but neither does TN, or Ole Miss, or anyone else.

Oh, you were on a certain newspaper comment section for trolls and saw all of the redneck 12 year old barn fans spewing their usual crap. Word of advice, stay off of that comment section and come here. I quit going there years ago and never have to worry about the Lee County idiots. TideFans is the ONLY place you need to go for Bama news.
 
I'll be honest, I think we kind of have a tendency to oversimplify this issue. I don't think anyone accuses us of having 90 on scholarship. They accuse us of having 85, losing 10, then signing 25, leaving 15 that we have to get rid of somehow. And, to some degree that is true.
But, it is not inappropriate. Look at it this way.
If you own a business. You have a huge task to perform. You need 20 people. If you only have 18 people, you might be able to do it, but it won't be done as well, and you will be held accountable. And every prior year when you've had this task, you've had several people quit in the middle of the task. And you can't hire anyone once you begin.
Do you only hire 20? Or, do you hire 23, and handle the details later should only 2 people quit?

It would be silly to only get to 85 in the Spring if you were virtually certain that some would quit before Fall practice. If you miscount your numbers, you don't have to kick anyone off the team. You talk to some Freshmen about grayshirting before they sign, and you might have to ask them to do so before Fall begins. You might have to talk to a kid who has been injured for two years and who probably won't play again about going on a medical scholarship.
 
I read the most of the first page of this thread, 'til my eyes glazed over. CNS has the situation well in hand, always has, and always will. All the hand wringing over numbers is just an exercise in futility. As for "other non-Alabama boards", really, seriously.....

There are two types of oversigning. 1) Signing more than 25 to a calendar year class. 2) Signing more players that you have spots open counting returning scholarship players.

As to number #1, no one does this anymore in the SEC because it is prohibited by SEC rooms. Of course you can backcount (that is how Tennessee right now has 33 commits) but the 25 person rule is a hard rule now for SEC teams.

As to number #2, we certainly oversign in that way. It is true that no one KNOWS for sure who is on scholarship and who isn't from year to year. But we certainly know who starts on scholarship by which players sign a NLI and enroll in class. If we sign everyone that has committed, we WILL be over the 85 scholarship limit and you will see players leave. Will that number be 3 or 10 or somewhere in between? Only the staff knows that for sure.
 
Have we ever had a signing class where everyone we signed showed up and was eligible in August? I can't remember it if we did. Between that, academic issues with upperclassman, off season injuries, transfers, etc. I agree with the Great Danish that you are crazy to come to the end of the signing period with any less than 85; probably better to plan for a couple of washouts. My guess is that at least one signee won't have the grades or test score -- don't have anyone in mind, just experience.
 
There was an article stating he'll be transferring.. but Don't quote me on here. We'll know in few weeks.

No, not there, either. I always feel like I need a shower after reading the comments section on that site. Try my best not to do that anymore. Complete waste of time.
 
Let me put this one out real quick. There are lot of rumors circulating that He may be transferring to another school, and I am not going to quote the sources because it is what it is: rumors. I do not know if it's credible or not, but My gut feeling is that he will transfer, possibly after the spring practice. If he doesn't transfer, Look for him to move to DBs or something. But right now, He's still enrolled at Alabama taking classes. as far as oversigning, I don't think it really exists to some point. LIke I stated earlier, It depends on who is on scholarship and who is not. There is no way to know for sure. For all we know, Yeldon could be taking out student loans in the fall, knowing that he'll go NFL next year.
 
Nobody outside of the inner circle knows the exact count on scholarship football players. We do know that we can sign 25 per year and we can only have 85 on scholarship.

Here are a few observations:
Of the graduating seniors in Dec. how many had a scholarship?
How many football players are getting an academic scholarship and not athletic?
Do we have any on the Bear Bryant scholarship?
Do we have players on partial scholarship?
How many are or will be ineligibile?
We know how many have transferred but how many more will leave at the end of this semester?

By best guess estimates, we can conclude that Bama has an approximate number of somewhere in the upper 50's on scholarship. That leaves CNS the chance to sign 25 and award a few non-scholarship players a scholarship and still meet the NCAA numbers.
