To Conclude: from 2008 to 2023, Bama arguably should have won the ship or been in the ship every single season and they almost accomplished that.
Arguably, okay.
But just about every team that has ever won a national championship has been lucky SOMEWHERE along the line, too. Alabama's 1978 national championship, which was the year we lost the regular season game to USC head-to-head, can be justified in some minds because:
a) USC did have a loss, too
b) USC was handed not one but two games late in the year thanks to horrific officiating
Colorado got handed a Fifth Down but still needed a bunch of teams in front to lose.
Florida St only made it in 1993 because Notre Dame lost to Boston College the next week.
Florida only played for the title in 1996 because four-loss Texas shocked Nebraska.
Nebraska won on a kicked ball in 1997.
Tennessee won an early game (Syracuse maybe?) on a bad PI call and then needed a Clint Stoerner fumble when they were all but dead in 1998.
Nebraska only made the 2001 national title game because of 9/11.
LSU's 2003 national title berth happened because Boise St beat Hawaii and Syracuse beat Notre Dame and both losses pushed USC's strength of schedule below LSU's.
Was any champion ever luckier than LSU in 2007?
Ok, maybe Auburn in 2010......
Alabama needed Iowa St to shock OK State in 2011.
Alabama needed Ohio St to be on probation in 2012 else no repeat.
Ohio State needed Baylor to lose in 2014.
And dare I mention 4th and 25 with Arkansas or going for two in 2015 taking down Ole Miss?
LSU blew almost everyone out, but Tua's fumble and Burrow's tackle were the difference in 2019
Does UGA "really" win without two injured Tide wideouts in 2021?
One more play by Alabama and we probably make it in 2022 but a lot of teams would say that.
