Gameday is upon us! Since I'm up waay to late inhaling massive quantities of Crimson Koolaid, here is my fearless prognostication (fearless because I ain't putting any money on it)
I like UK better than any SEC Least team except Vandy. Great B-ball tradition, and once had THE coach on their sidelines. That said, my Koolaid enhanced take on the game is this:
UK's defense: I know they've got the number 1 scoring defense in the conference (Which I'm sure coach Saban has pounded into our guys' heads frequently this week); but that was against Louisville, Norfolk State, MTSU, and Western Kentucky. (not exactly offensive juggernauts) Now it's time to prove they can do it against the best offensive line and running backs they'll see this year. So far this year nobody's passed that test. They can't stop the Ingram, Coffee, Upchurch express without putting eight in the box. When they try that JPW will pick their secondary apart just like he did UGA.
As for our players' attitudes: Bama had the perfect half last week against UGA to announce their intentions for the year, and then followed it with the perfect half to make them understand that they can't get complacent or over-confident. I drink the Koolaid freely and; since I'm not on the field, there's no harm in enjoying the ride I've had so far. At the same time Coach has the koolaid off-limits to the team. All of the player interviews intimate respect for UK, so I don't expect a letdown this week; they know there's no day off against any SEC team.
UK's offense consists mainly of four running backs, an average QB, and one truly reliable target (the other's have way too many drops). Bama's run defense has tested it's metal against Davis, Spiller, and Moreno, and they combined for a total of 54 yards on the ground. Our Secondary is second to none in the SEC with Woodall and Arenas proving any doubters wrong against the best QB in the SEC (possibly the country). He had one good drive against UA the whole game, and the others were all short field scores with the game out of reach.
If not for their special teams (Kick Returning in particular) UK wouldn't score a touchdown this game; but unfortunately I do expect them to have at least a couple of big returns that either will result in special teams TDs or will leave UK with a very short field to navigate. I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen nothing to give me any confidence that I am. Add a couple of field goals, and I won't be surprised to see them score more than Clemson, but less than UGA. Final score :
Bama 34, UK 20.
