Speaking of underachievers.....
Does Bill Curry remind anyone else of Jimmy Carter?
Whenever I see him on ESPN or read one of his articles, I can't help but think of somebody who is trying to rewrite history....

Sorry if anybody here happens to be a Carter fan, but I just couldn't resist!

I think that Brodie Croyle is the perfect answer to this question precisely because he does own every record at Alabama. Just imagine if he had been healthy under a stable coaching staff for his four years at Bama. He would have been one of the best to ever come through this school.

Now none of this is his fault, but I dont think that changes the fact that he could have been one of the truely great ones and ended up being only mediocre.

I'd bet, that's what Audio was thinking in the first place. However, I won't go as far as saying "it's none of his fault." There were things in which he could have taken a more mature approach.

Precisely...

What about a coach forcing a more mature approach? I'm sorry, but sometimes it seemed that the "tail was wagging the dog" in a few instances.

No, it wasn't Brodie who was mediocre. Brodie played his heart out, and injuries notwithstanding, performed to the best of his abilities.. I have said before in other strings that Brodie's experience was hampered by a lack of play time, which can be directly contributed to his injuries. Brodie walked back out on that field time and time again when many other primadonna QB's would have stayed on the bench. To me that is neither mediocre nor underachieving. I believe it was the mediocre performance by the offensive line, i.e. lack of blocking, that led to some of his injuries. Some very transparent and vanilla offensive playcalling led to poor performance by the o-line in general.
But a man who took everything he had, including his very heart and soul out onto the gridiron and sacrificed it all for the Tide doesn't deserve to be denigrated by you or anyone else. So don't you dare call Brodie an underachiever. Don't you dare.
Roll Tide

I wonder what his abilities would have been if he had spent some time in the weight room? Nobody - nobody - is only able to gain about 20 lbs (yah, I'm feeling generous) in four years at a school like Bama.

The deck was stacked against him, sure, but if you think he gave 100% / 365 I'd say you're out to lunch.

Yeah, I dare.

Despite not living up to the hype (who could?), Brodie Croyle will go down as one of the best to ever play QB at Bama. Even if he doesn't, I simply refuse to disparage a young man that could've gone anywhere in the country and yet chose to come to Bama, even with sanctions pending.

Besides, I don't like to agonize over unfulfilled potential because for every "sure thing" blue chipper that fails to live up to the hype, there's 2-3 guys you never heard of who over-achieve and become fan favorites.

Jarrett Johnson, Alonzo Ephraim, Dwayne Rudd, Michael Myers, Saleem Rasheed, Demeco Ryans, Cornelius Griffin, Ahmaad Galloway, Kenny KingTerry Jones, jr among others come to mind. How about Smoke Dixon? He couldn't cover his own shadow when he first got on the field.

I just believe you never know who is going to be the great ones...and its hardly ever who you expect. RTR.

The first 10 that come to mind...

1. Albert Means
2. Eric Locke (and his dad, Juicy)
3. Brandon Miree
4. Freddie Milons
5. Travis Carrol
6. Von Ewing
7. Santonio "Bently" Beard
8. Dante Ellington
9. Brodie Croyle
10. AC Carter (not his fault)
