Anyone else a little let down with NSD?

We don't really have a hot player that will contribute immediately, but as far as solid futures go it doesn't get much better than that. But I think it's safe to say the players we're most excited about are returning players, but that's what happens when you have the kind of depth we do.

Take your pick of the DBs, one or some of them will likely contribute immediately.

CS... terrific post. One thing that is getting UA fans "down" is simply the fact that for once, Auburn is getting more positive pub than us today by several in the media. Personally, I don't look at it as "how did we finish"... rather, "how did we do?"

IF Philip Sims and Demarcus Milliner committed to us today rather than months ago, many of our fans would feel better... however, I don't know why timing is that important because the fact remains we still have them and we should be just as excited about their potential no matter when they commited.

Thanks, I was rushing to get that post typed and posted so I could watch the CNS NSD Press Conference so I forgot to even mention the very talented WRs. lol I also made quite a few typos which I corrected.

Well anyway I watched CNS talk about this class and he said some of the same things that I said and a whole lot more. I can honestly say that I am pleased and happy with this class. ;)

Disagree... we will likely see either Milliner or Fulton (or both) see immediate playing time, especially since both will be able to go through spring practice. Also, both kicking prospects may end up starting as freshmen. Looking back the past two years, three true frosh starters have been about the norm.

I know where you are coming from as there was no NSD drama or big announcents. But diasappointment, no.
CNS has really changed the face of recruiting IMO in that he gets the big names locked in throughout the year, rather than waiting to signing day. This helps garner more attention year round and get other guys in as well. I'm glad I'm not sitting by the TV in anticipation for the Tim Tebows to tell us see ya!

LOL, where were you when we were waiting for Grant's LOI to come in?

This is a great recruiting class. Being the #5 class is not bad but consider that we have 3 or 4 recruits that we feel are very underated.......I trust the evaluation of CNS over some pencil pushers, any day.

Dude, 11 of them are already on campus. That adds a star in my mind. I kid, but seriously, this class fills every need we had.

I see a few players who have the potential to be game changers.

And here's the beauty of where our Coaching Staff has us now...a few years ago, starting a true freshman was the sign of a talent gap. Now it means we have recruited one tough cookie who was able to come in, kick butt and win the starting position!! I love it. Thanks Coach!

:BigA:We didnt have to finish with a one star and a 2 star player at the end just to say we got a certain # of recruits that possibly might give a higher recruiting ranking just by the shere #.

How can you look at the DB's we got and say you are let down? This is a really good class.
The OP said he KNOWS this is a good class. He wasn't saying this isn't a good class.

I know what you are saying dude. I kinda feel it too. I wanted one of those players that ALL the ESPNU guys were talking about. The live selections etc. I feel you man. I agree. Kinda of a nonchalant signing day.

great class though, I think we were second in the highest average of players though. We averaged above 4 stars. So thats good stuff.

As for my fav. Cade Foster for sure! I'm looking foward to some more trick Special team plays with that hoss on the field!

Like I saw someone else say, if Sims, Milliner or Fulton (for example) would have announced today there would have been more excitement on NSD for us but unlike last year all of our big name recruits had already committed for the most part. Honestly I like to see them enroll early like a lot of them did. Gets them on campus faster and lets them get to work. Better for my heart as well, so I'm not stressing out to see which hat they put on ;) I get enough stress watching games.

Not many players from Saban's last two recruiting classes. Of the those that have, most have been "studs" to say the least. Mark Ingram, our very first Heisman winner and MVP of the BCSNG game; Julio Jones, SEC freshman of the year, still has incredible potential; Trent Richardson, all SEC freshman honors and would easily be the number one back at any other school; Nico Johnson, all SEC freshman honors, helped fill a whole and adjusted incredibly quickly and hasn't near peaked yet; Dont'a Hightower...Barret Jones...William Vlachos...Marquis Maze...Mark Barron...Marcell Dareus. How many "homeruns" that caliber has Chizik hit? Will Dyer or Newton end up being as good (relative to their position) as any of those players? I think not.

I'm most excited about the players we already have next year, but that's just because they've had longer to learn the system.

I really don't understand where this type of feeling is coming from? This class is great and I mean great. There are 7 HS signees that are already in school including two of the best players in the country Demarcus Milliner and Phillip Sims. Three 2009 grayshirts are now signed and in school and one JUCO from the 2008 class is in school. That are 11 players from this class that are already in school right now that will be able compete this Spring. Then you look at the other 18 signees from today. They are all very talented players and all but two of them will be able to be in school this summer. This class has more speed than we have had in a long while, which includes 2 RBs, one being the fastest player in Alabama and the other being a freak athlete. It includes 6 excellent DBs with size and speed. There are two excellent pass rushing DEs/Jack LB which has been lacking in recent years. One of the best LBs in the country that is smart as a whip. There are three huge OL that will be road graders in short order. A huge athletic DT that is expected to be a replacement for Mt. Cody. What is not to like?

Sorry, but I really don't get the I wish I could have watched a 'sexy' prospect pick a Bama hat. I actually like the fact that this class was completely done on Feb. 2nd and I didn't have to sit through some hat switching routine. The only downer about the entire class is what happened to Allen, especially how it happened.

Bottom line is the 2010 signing class meets the needs of the team very well and it is ranked in the top five by Rivals.com, Scout.com and ESPNU. How can that be a bad thing or cause anyone to feel a little let down?
I can understand the disappointment. Don't get me wrong, I like our class & I LOVE the DB & OL recruits. And I love how many enrolled early. But this isn't about signing day itself being uneventful (I honestly thought we'd have a full class committed before the New Year). My disappointment is the players we missed. Going back to the start of the last summer, after watching as many highlights & reading as many articles about recruits as I could find, my "wish list" looked (& remained) like this:

(in no particular order)
Craig Sanders*
D. Milliner
DeMarco Cobbs*
Jarrick Williams
Victor Beasley*
Keenan Allen*
J. Fulton

These aren't just players we had hoped to interest in coming to Bama (unlike a Prater, Ambles, Luc, etc). These are guys that were big on Bama. Some of them we thought were on the verge of committing. Some of them DID commit. Some committed & decommitted. These recruits topped many of our "wish lists." And we missed them.

I was also disappointed with Bolton.

In all honesty, this is what we have been wanting to say for years and years guys. We aren't truly let down, we love the class we have. We filled needs, and got some fantastic players to fill them. I think what the poster is saying is that we didn't separate ourselves from everyone else like we should have. Coleman and Allen should be begging to play at Alabama. That is how I want it. Total and complete domination through the season and through signing day. We have to strive for that and remind ourselves of that. We should never settle for less, unless there is only less to settle for. That is my motto, and I am sure that Saban tries to live by that everyday.

Regardless of how good or dominant a team gets there will always be reasons for kids to pick other teams to play for. Lifelong fans, family alum, distance and (the biggie) immediate or early PT. There is also the numbers game that actually cost us Coleman this year.....we could have gotten him earlier but we had a few recruits on the board ahead of him. By the time he got a commitable offer he decided to stay where he had proclaimed to be 100% committed.
We will never be able to get all the great recruits we want but CNS has demonstrated he will get his share....or more.
If a #5 recruiting class is a "bad class" things are really good. Stay in or around the top 5 every year, you will be in the NC hunt every year and win more than your share. If we can consistently get a top 5 class, like the last 3 years, we will be fine.

You are correct. Even at the pinnacle of Coach Bryant's success, he lost kids for the same reasons.

People tend to forget as well, we signed a couple of kickers.

Kickers aren't going to raise our "Star per player" average, which goes into the ratings. Kickers are one to two stars at best, unless you sign a Morten Andersen.

I'm glad we didn't sign Terrell Owens, excuse me, Keenan Allen, and I wish him the best as he drifts into oblivion with his agents in the Berkley community.

We don't need a premadonna who places himself first. Team second.

That's not bitter, that's just a fact.

I listened to Finebaum yesterday and he said Allen told Saban about the "Brother offer". Finebaum said the conversation lasted about two seconds.

Thank goodness.

I'm very satisfied with this class. I think it's going to surprise a lot of folks.

sip

I'm glad that I read the thread, because I was going to post many of the same sentiments as you.

For a number of reasons, we'll never get all of the guys we want; no one does. I have the utmost confidence in CNS to get enough of the best players in the country, in the right places, to keep us from hurting at any one position. CNS evaluates talent as well as anyone, and will always get his share of the cream.

To answer the original question, I'm not the least bit disappointed in this class. Also, the sparkling crystal football we just got will make it a lot easier to listen to the barners talk about how much ground they've made, or how much CNS is shaking in his boots at Chizik's recruiting prowess. Coach would tell you to tune out all of the "clutter," and you'll see that we got what we needed.

Why is it that so many wide receivers are head cases?

IMO, it is a GREAT day to be a Bama fan!! 14-0, SEC Champs, Heisman Trophy, National Championship--what else do you want!! A Top 3 class is OUTSTANDING!!

Not disappointed at all, as of today. Gimme two years to let you know how I really feel about this class. I stopped "worrying" about the talent we were bringing in when CNS landed at Tuscaloosa Regional from Miami.

Recruiting can be fun to watch, but the recent phenomenon is a result of the interest (and money) cultivated by recruiting services and media that have capitalized on the college football starved masses. If there ever was an area of sports where the term "mythical national championship" would apply, it's recruiting.
