Anyone else worried that we are last in the SEC in sacks?

This, too, shall pass. Coach Saban seems to make line play on both sides of the ball one of his primary concerns. Unfortunately we just don't have the depth at D-line right now to generate a heavy pass rush. Next year I expect improvement, but since we'll be counting on freshmen to provide a lot of our depth, I wouldn't count on us being dominant -- just improved. 2010 is the earliest that I think we might start to see true defensive domination.

I don't know what else you expected from this defense. We are not a talented group. This coaching staff have/will recruit to improve this.

What does our front 7 need to do? Are we missing Motley that bad?

We got almost ZERO pressure on Stafford last weekend. I think we came close to a sack once. Our defense has to start getting some pressure on the QB instead of letting them stand back there all day until a receiver gets open.
we need to stop talking trash about how we're going to know everything about the qb. and we are last in sacks? go figure.

Certainly doesn't surprise me. It was not unexpected...

Bingo. We have talent and depth issues on defense and on offense. We are not a great team, but we are being well coached and playing hard. Those two things can help us win some games that we may be underdogs in. I would love for us to get a win this week, but I don't think we have near the athletes they have. I hope we can gut out another win like we did with Arkansas.

Of course, we're worried.........but, nobody should be surprised!!! We knew coming in to this year that we had a young, inexperienced line with little to no depth. In time, this will be the strength of our team (see LSU) and NOT a weakness.
Let the process work its course.

RTR!!!!

No - I'm not too worried. I think we're doing ok on D, despite the lack of sacks. What we really need is to give the D more rest, so that maybe they can be more effective. For that reason, I'd like to see more offensive production.

I think JPW is a good QB, though I wish he had a better long ball and could hit the WRs in stride. No real answer to that though, except more S&C training, reps, etc. But with our depth at RB, I think we could make some adjustments in the backfield.

I'd like to see more play out of Coffee and Upchuch. I know - Grant is the big threat guy, but because of their size, Coffee and Upchurch seem to be more consistent in getting those 3 and 4 yrds that sustain drives and keep our D off the field. Why no mention of Johns? I personally don't like his running style - too upright, high center of gravity. I think he is a great athelete though and should probably be used in some capacity (LB?).

I'd also like to see more two-back sets with Coffee or Upchurch and Grant in the backfield. An additional blocker might get Grant out in space more often, where he can really be effective. Maybe a few out-passes to Grant, again to get him the ball in space.

Bottom line: I think a few adjustments on offense would probably greatly enhance the effectiveness of our defense, sacks included.

yes, but will come with time and learning. there is only way to get there people have to get pt. the fact that games are close is a time for players to get in for some plays to help with the learning process yes i know no experince means that they shouldnt be on the field but how else are u to get that expirence . the pro philospies that were used in the past dont apply to college sometimes you just to put them in and let them play and take afew lumps and learn the speed, the crowd and the importance of learning the techniques

I would say I'm worried, but not surprised.I still just shake my head at all the unrealistic sunshine pumpers who convinced many on how good our D would be this year. That said I'm impressed with the effort the D displays most of the time, but worried about the missed, and too high tackles we seem to slip into at times. To be honest, after looking over the depht chart this spring I think we have done a pretty fair job with the material we have on D.

The defense isn't the unit that's under achieving. It's the offense. The defense is actually overachieving.

My sentiments exactly. I'm not worried that we're last at this point in the season. What's scary is that it isn't going to get much easier as the season goes on.

the sacks arent a big problem by its self. when you combine that with a secondary that dosent cover its best all the time ,then you have something to worry about. you dont hear the anouncers saying ,that was a coverage sack.
