I think that's wrong, Croyle was at the tail end of the Dubose error and Fran actually signed him. Dubose put all of his eggs in the Watts basket.

CT, somebody with a better memory might correct me, but as I recall, DuBose started recruiting Carnell and Brodie very, very early in their high school careers. As I also recall, our former coach made a lot of promises to prize recruits -- he told Albert Means, for example, that he would start the first game if he signed; and Means was out there during the first series against UCLA in 2000, so overweight it's a wonder he didn't die of heat stroke. My memory is that he told Croyle and Williams he would not recruit anyone else at their positions.

That's why I wonder if that could have factored in Dubose's decisiont to pass on Applewhite -- and several other kids who wanted to wear red. Landing Watts was a big deal for DuBose. But most folks back then thought Croyle was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of kid. DuBose was desperate to have both of them.

Saban must see something in him that he likes or he wouldn't be considered period. I am sure he knows far and beyond what these coach's abilities are. I don't care how young Applewhite is. If CNS thinks he is ready, then I do too. IMHO, if Major were to come to Bama it would be a blessing seeing how he has wanted to be here his whole life. I know that young man will be working harder than anyone to prove he has deserved to be at Alabama from the very beginning.... Roll Tide!!!!

How's this for inside info. Major Applewhite's Brother is my next door neighbor. I guess I'll walk next door tonite and ask him for a little insight.
By the way, Major Loves BAMA. He wanted to come here but couldn't get an offer. He was named after Major Olgivie. His brother saw my basement and said My brother is a big BAMA fan too. I said really who's your brother. That's when I found out his brother was Major.

Dubose did put all of his eggs in the Watts basket in the 1998 recruiting class, but that was the year after Applewhite. As for Croyle and Williams, they were in the 2001 recruiting class. That would have been Fran's first year. The coaching change, and Fran's virginity in SEC recruiting wars, left Cadillac to choose Tubbs. Croyle, we all know, got the full court press from Fran, and all the promises with it, and enrolled for spring 2001.

I couldn't remember the recruiting year for Applewhite, but the rumour I always heard was Dubose passed on Rivers because he promised not to recruit another QB the same year as Watts. I surmised Applewhite could have fallen into the same boat. Even though we signed Zow as a QB (the only major college to offer him as a QB), he wasn't highly sought after so we didn't pass Applewhite up for him. As for Croyle, I doubt even Dubose would have passed on Applewhite on the hopes of getting Croyle three years later.

Barnell Williams and family felt like fRan slighted them when he made Brodie Croyle his first visit. fRan was supposed to meet with both of them on his visit to the Gadsden area but spent so much time at the Croyl's he rescheduled his visit to Barnell.

FWIW.....Jay Barker stated on WJOX this morning that Dubose had said that MA was not good enough to play QB in D1 football and that`s why no scholarship offer from Bama. Jay`s pretty reliable. He stood on the Saban to Bama deal from the start.
