I have no inside information whatsoever. Still, I'll speculate on what's different.

First, as others, including Saban, have said, Saban's age was getting to be a problem in recruiting. DeBoer being only 49 is a huge help there. Remember, Saban himself had turned 55 the Halloween before he came to Tuscaloosa.

Second, Saban has also hinted that his age was hindering his ability to attract quality staff coaches. Point being, Saban was forced to spend a lot of time doing stuff that a higher-quality staff would have handled. Which took time away from something at which he's an all-time great -- recruiting.

DeBoer is a really really good coach. He might or might not challenge Saban for GOAT status -- realistically, you'd have to say the odds are probably against that. That doesn't mean he isn't danged good.

More important, by all accounts, DeBoer's staff represents a material upgrade from Saban's 2021-24 staffs. So there's a good chance that top to bottom overall coaching ability, from the Head Coach to the most anonymous GA, might be better.

Finally, Saban is still on staff making $500K a year, essentially as a consultant to DeBoer. I'm guessing that DeBoer is using Saban's talents as a recruiter to great advantage, with the occasional skull session on setting overall program strategy and how best to implement that strategy.

My Take On What's Different:
- DeBoer is really really good to begin with.
- DeBoer has a better staff than Saban had his last 4 years.
- DeBoer is only 49, so opponents can't use the HC's age against us anymore.
- Saban is still on staff and I'm betting he has his hands all in the recruiting process -- player evaluation (football skills and off-field reliability), identifying each recruit's hot buttons and pressing them home. Plus the fine details of conducting recruiting visits -- starting with professional level travel arrangements, on to meeting the player and family at the airport in an impressive fashion, and showing each player and family exactly what they want to see (hot buttons already having been identified).

Admittedly pure speculation on my part. But it's the simplest explanation I can manufacture that still ties up all the loose ends.

Don't know how the rankings will work out but if you go with the law of averages on top players Ohio State has 3 of the top 6 players. and 2 more in the top 40. UGA is doing well in the top 40 as well with 5 committed or heavily leaning. Alabama looks to have a lead one one, split chance on another with two committed but the two commits are 39 and 40 so we are definitely not "taking the country by storm" as is commonly said. If it all comes down to money Alabama alumni base can't compete dollar for dollar. Ohio State has historically produced about twice as many graduates as the University and Ohio State being in the north east their graduates just got a lot richer. While they are ranked around 17 or so nationally most of the other schools are nerd schools so they don't' care about football. On those lists you'll see Texas and Notre Dame way up there as well and also doing well on the top 40.

It's going to boil down to how well weathy 19 year olds play football.

Alot may depend on how well DeBoer develops players. I'm not sure if we were doing that well in the last few years vs earlier. This class doesn't need to go far to beat the 2019 class. Only 10 guys stayed with the program and only one 5 star (Evan Neal). A staggering 17 players bailed. Tua's little brother and Keilan Robinson of that group achieved some level of success.

To me, I don’t care about the class ranking vs other teams. It’s the class ranking vs previous years. I always had a “magic” number in mind of the overall class score on 247 composite. It was always 300. If CKD can pull an overall 300 class score , to me, we will have plenty of talent. I know recruiting service rankings aren’t the end all, be all for recruiting. But, they have gotten good enough to be a solid predictor of talent.
Bump @bamaga

We are currently at 299.32. With TY Haywood and Deer still to commit.

Courtney Morgan has made a big difference. The cureent players have been much more heavily involved in hosting visits, we used to only have a player host once a year, and I think ryan Williams has been a host every weekend since he enrolled.

Also the rules have changed a bit since courts decided that the NCAA can really restrict NIL collectives from recruiting.

Yea Alabama has a bit more of a war chest than it did, and we MAY have gotten slightly more competitive there. Havent heard much from the folks on that end.
Bama needs to provide Elon Musk with an honorary degree and hopefully enlist him for his pocket change to endow Bama’s collective. 😊

I would complain about the distinct lack of 5 star players but having hears some of what 5 star players are demanding in payment It makes me think more like NFL teams. Is this five star player worth the asking price? will he make a difference to justify the outlay required to not only get him, but keep him year after year. I can see a game changing QB for instance being worth the price. Possibly a left tackle or a Julio Jones type player but not every five star to me is going to be worth what they might ask JUST because they got a fifth star.

I really think the rating system needs to take into account how good a prospect are they, but take into acccount their position impact and the asking price.
No matter how deep the coffers, everyone for the most part have to be conscientious of how they are going to allocate those funds. I think our staff has equaled or matched the "big offers" for certain guys, but aren't just prioritizing everyone who has a fifth star next to their name. I also think our guys have made it apparent that we aren't going to pay top dollar for High school potential, unless we feel it is a "must get" type guy, and instead will leave those funds allocated for the portal and the top names that come out.

I can't wait for the "I've outplayed my contract" type of talk like a lot of NFL players do after signing a new contract. That will be the next hurdle the coaching staff will have to deal with if they're not already. Whatever you pay initially, will only go up from there, so be careful.

Stipulations in their NIL deals is inevitable. Unless you are in good standing with the team and school, you don't receive any money.

Well, if there's even a HINT that a school is trying to weasel out of paying a player because of "Good Standing" or some such excuse, you can forget about recruiting. It's over. "Trust me, Bro" ain't gonna cut it.

Oh that's already happening. Happened with Proctor before he transferred to Iowa.
