There are some terribly pathetic peddlers of irrational hate in that fanbase. It's somewhat understandable (although still sad) when people fester hate over political issues or social issues because those truly have a huge effect upon our lives. However, football is a game and is supposed to be an affirmative activity for people. It is sold as a way for participants to learn teamwork, sportsmanship and self-motivation.
Some people however have placed an unhealthy emphasis on winning at any cost. When fans are conspiring to destroy athletes' eligibility, supporting attempts to injure them and belittling their hard-earned achievements just for the sake of victories in which the fans have only a illegitimate interest, it seems that they have lost sight of the spirit of athletics. Is a victory really still a victory to the victor if the spoils are spoiled?
Unfortunately, I don't think that the general fanbase recognizes just how irrational some of their number truly are. There are some irrational fans in the Alabama fanbase, but they seem more targeted at the Auburn fanbase than the institution itself. Some of the Auburn fanbase seems completely willing to destroy the futures of student-athletes and do damage to the academic institution itself for the sake of wins on the football field. It is likely that this will end badly for both universities if someone doesn't step in and exert some control over the situation. It's like a mutually-assured destruction scenario and both schools could end up destroying each other.
