My future brother-in-law, who is a big Ga Tech fan told me that he heard on the radio that Alabama and Tech are looking at playing a home and home the next couple of years with the extra game. Has anyone else heard this? I think it would be great if true.

I hope we do play GA Tech,

that is a great old rivalry from way back in the day. They are included in our fight song, the old grudge from back in the 60's, the fact that Bill Curry would have to act like he didn't care who won. I think a good SEC & ACC matchup would be a boost for our guys.

I had heard a Tech rep mentioned this around the time the 12th game was announced. There was no conversation from Mal about it though. I mentioned this home and away series in another thread b/c of our old ties. I think it would be a nice addition to our schedule, especially if we happend to play in the GA Dome.

i wouldnt be opposed to picking GT up as a permananent opponent. we dont have anyone we play year in and year out, out of conference. i think this would be a nice rivalry game for both teams. it would also eliminate the need to keep finding formidable "mid-major" opponent every couple of years, and it would create an additional buzz for each season. IMHO.

I wouldn't count on playing them in the Dome, when Auburn played them here two years ago they had to play in their stadium.

*In my best Trev Alberts impersonation*....

"that's why you're Auburn"

....it might be unlikely, but I'm sure it will be mentioned

The Dome would probably be already set up for a Falcons game. There'd be a lot of variables there. I bet Tech would want it at home rather than deal with trying to work around the Falcons.

I think GaTech would be a good out of conference opponent for us. Honestly I don't get as excited about some of these cupcake teams we play. Don't get me wrong, I know every major school schedules those types of teams. Sometimes you have to, but I for one would love to see at least one credible out of conference team added to the schedule. I loved it the couple of years we played Oklahoma. Even though we lost, those were terrific games and their fans seem pretty cool too.

I understand that the cupcake nonconference schedule is probably a good thing until Bama finishes clawing its way out from under the NCAA sanctions. But after that, I'd like to see us go back to playing at least one "name" nonconference game every season. Georgia Tech, Penn State, Texas, ND, or whoever. That hasn't worked out too well lately, but I am not an AU fan: I would rather lose a thriller to Oklahoma or UCLA than beat the Citadel. I-AA teams like UT-Chatt are beneath Alabama's dignity, and have no business on the schedule under ordinary circumstances.

Like everyone else I think it would be a great match up. Ga Tech is a fairly good match up, and they can be pretty good from time to time. It would probably be a national TV draw as an inter-major conference game.

Cecil Hurt had the following quote from this column:
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has quoted Georgia Tech athletic director Dave Braine as saying that there have been “discussions" with Alabama. There is reciprocal interest from the Alabama side for the renewal of that series, which has historical and geographic advantages going for it. Whether Alabama would have interest in playing other, more distant “name" opponents remains to be seen.
I would love if that happened. I went to Tech for grad school, so they are my second favorite team. I would go to both games for sure.

I would be really surprised if the game would be at the Georgia Dome. Georgia Tech always has it's home games at Bobby Dodd Stadium which has around 55,000. That is even when they play FSU, Georgia, and other big name opponents. If they don't move the game to the dome for UGA, they aren't going to do it for us.

Renewing the series with GT

It would be a good one. I would hope some of the venom has worked its way out from both sides. As much as people here hate UT (I, for one, pity UT, if this last decade is the best they can do, with Bama out of the way for the moment), there was a HUGE rivalry between Birmingham and Atlanta, and Alabama, Georgia Tech were set in the center.... the sheer hatred GT had for Bama is almost beyond belief (according to my grandfather), worse that the UT, Bama rivalry now.

Screw Georgia Tech.
They decided to leave the SEC, so to heck with them. Plus Tech has the worst place for visitors in all college ball. Playing the the ACC does not mean that you have a lot of visitor's fan flocking to see a Tech game, so a few years ago they put all but 1,500 visitors in the far reaches of the upper deck of the endzone They left the lower level visitors fan right next to the new student section which make for a heck of a day. This may work nice when you play in the ACC and the visitors only bring 2,000 fans, but for a SEC team to go to Grant Field is terrible.

From this photo you can see the nice way that Tech is to the visitors. The red is the Georgia Bulldogs. The fans in the left side upper deck has limited sight of the other endzone. Since Grant Field hardly ever sales out, they would love for Bama to bring the fans. I only wish they treated the visitors better.

Isnt that the main reason for home field advantage to put the visiting team at an disadvantage. Heck, at BDS I think the visiting fans are too close to the field.
