Yeah, Horry played inside a lot on defense and led the SEC in blocks at least one year (maybe 1992) though he was not a true center. Those three players (Robinson, Sprewell, and Horry) under Oats with a buy-in to his system would be interesting. Same with Watford at LSU; he would fit nicely if he could buy-in. (I'm kinda drifting here...)
I saw them play against TAMU out here. It was a scrimmage game for us. Surprisingly, Robinson was the least successful as a pro

The Rocket 8 really got jobbed by the NCAA. They won the SECs auto tourney bid, but somebody of the players had played as freshman in previous years, and the NCAA said they couldn’t play in the tourney.

We do have one retro championship

All five of the Rocket 8 starters played as Freshmen. George Linn, Leon Marlaire, Dennis O'Shea, Richard Gunder, and Jerry Harper. Bama could have gone to the tournament, but none of them could have played. Useless to go without those five. Three ( Linn, Marlaire, and Harper) of them, plus the 'sixth man' (Jack Kubiszyn) are SEC Legends.

Beat me to it. Jack played the next year and led the team in scoring. The others, along with Dee, departed except for Jack and Fulmer. The Rocket 8 team still holds some records. They averaged in the upper 80s, IIRC, in an era when the jump shot was still an anomaly and the clock continued to run with the ball went out of bounds. That next year's team contained the point-shaving trio of Kaplan, Vogel and Quindazzi. Jack is still around T-Town, last I heard...

I had the great pleasure of seeing them become the first team in CBB history to score 100 points on Kentucky. 101-77 in Montgomery! Was a big deal because Rupp had three digits for the home team and two for the visitor on the scoreboard in Lexington.

The part that's galling about the NCAA thing is that they weren't freshman in 55-56, but had played as freshmen in years past.

That was impressive. IDK that people understand the 87+ or whatever it was exactly, for the year, with a no-stoppage clock. It would be 100 easily today...

Johnny Dee knew the rule when he came to Bama. He brought (recruited) those guys in and played them for four years. He knew they would be good and make him look good. Dee was all about Dee and not Bama.
Pretty much. He left in '56 and I entered in '57, stuck with Lambert and the cheaters he recruited at tryouts...

Looking at the UNC box score, we had practically no depth to speak of. That was my senior year at UA and I sorta remember a drop off in the basketball team that year and I do remember us needing some interior help but I had forgotten how bad it was. We still were a pretty good team in spite of that.

I agree that those guys would have done very well in CNO's system.
Wimp never played more than 8. I always felt that was part of our reason for losing in the S16 so often. They were always so beat down.

The gap between 32 and 16 games is a tough one. Adrenaline and emotion subsides. Hard to get that energy back up.

You may be correct. With the talent we had in the 80's and early 90's there should have been at least one year when we were able to break through and win a sweet 16 game.
