Bama Coordinator Search Thread

For those who know...was curious...what kind of money would they be able to pay Freeze in a consultant type roll? Secondly, is this a way to ease him into a bigger role (OC) down the road?

Just through my research, they usually range from 50,000 to 100,000 in general but a school like Alabama could easily exceed that number if they wanted. I think there are two scenarios that could play out with a freeze hire, 1) It aids in helping him get his name back out there for other schools to hire 2) he's given a higher position here down the road. I think number one is more likely especially if Locksley does a good job. That's taken into account that hes not given a co-coordinator title which would change things a little.

Talent alone right now will win 10 games next year. Regardless of what kind of job he does, the wheels won't fall off.

I think there are several hundred plays that work if they are executed successfully. If CML can get the players to execute his plays successfully -- I have little doubt we will be in a position to repeat.

Maybe Saban has in mind putting Freeze upstairs at games, watching as a consultant but not coaching, like Sark did. That kept Sark in reserve in case Kiffin returned to form and pooped out. I don't think Lock will poop out, but Saban might feel better to have Freeze basically on the bench in reserve.

At first, I was extremely disappointed that Saban would interview Freeze or even entertain the idea of hiring him. I now realize my error. It's brilliant. If Saban is refused the chance to add Freeze to the staff, it will poison Freeze for our closest competitors. If Saban doesn't threaten to hire Freeze, you can bet a Georgia or Tennessee or Florida or Texas would. And, in my "paranoid ......" view, the NCAA would totally greenlight it. It's perfect.

Don't get the offensive love for Freeze - his MO is a mobile QB with a gun and a corps of receivers that can stretch the field (and bounce a football off and to each other in serendipitous situations). What else to recommend him as 'Bama's OC other than that Saban's lower-case "c" catholicism for coaches has a fondness for sinners?

Well if I had to choose between Locks and Freeze as my OC..... and not even considering personal issues. I still choose Locks. Mike has more OC experience and hell Freeze fired himself from calling plays a few years ago. I still believe Coach was not going to hire Freeze as OC regardless. Somewhere on the staff but not OC. I think Long was Saban’s #1 choice and after that he went to #2 for continuity. Coach has worked with Locks a couple years now. He knows and trusts him to do the best for Alabama. Coach don't like to lose period. He's not going to start now.

Damien Harris seems to really want CML as OC, and Harris is returning for his senior year. Does that perchance mean he will be our featured back next year?

Maybe it just means Locksleys offensive philosophy includes more running by running backs and less by QB.

I know I am going to get flamed for this comment, or it may even get deleted. Here goes:

I really, really like the Locksley hire. First off it will definitely set well in 85% of the recruits home. Okay I know you guys are thinking why is that. Well this is Coach Saban's first hire of a black coordinator since he has been with us. I know you guys will flame this, but even though it is 2018 there is african american parents that still looks at that. Me being an an African American from the state of Alabama I still here Auburn fans that say this. You guys will see a big difference it will make in the area of recruiting.

By no means am I saying that this is the only reason Coach Saban will make this hire. Please don't think that

Bobby Williams, Bo Davis, Derrick Ansley, Mel Tucker, etc....

yeah, i'm surely not an expert on x's and o's, but i've always put freeze in the same category as gus, create a lot of confusion/eye candy with a qb who can scramble and then chunk balls downfield and let your tall receivers fight for the catch.

No flame here. I believe that what you say is very truthful, but I also believe that Coach Saban is color blind. I believe he selects his assistants by their knowledge, background, and integrity.

Bobby Williams was a special teams coordinator but I don't think Davis, Ansley, or Tucker were coordinators and if they were then it wasn't as the playcaller.

Being the playcalling OC and DC is a big spotlight position at a program like this one. I do think there is a certain amount of significance to Locksley's hire in that regard. I don't think it was a part of Saban's decision making process but it is meaningful.

Well I definitely hope that is not a parameter for the hiring process. I want the best man for the job regardless of race. With the talent we are going to put on the field next year, Coach Saban can hire an old Marine like me to run this offense

I get that you are not saying that race is the reason for the hire but that it may help in recruiting subliminally. You may be right - I can't put my self in the mind of one of these players. And Saban is definitely interested in making hires who can recruit. But with Saban, it begins and ends with competence. Saban only hires Locksley if he thinks that he can do the job. If Saban is wrong, it costs Alabama championships and hurts the program. He knows this more than any of us.

Saban would not sacrifice competence for some potential lift in recruiting, and that lift in recruiting would not overcome incompetence at a position this important.
