Bama defense in 2020

After watching some old games, we had a horrendous defense against OleMiss

That Golding was not fired after season was biggest mistake in CNS tenure.

Winning national championship covered deficiencies in program

CNS used to say bad win hides deficiencies .. guess he didnt apply that to coaches.

This past season was the best Bama defense in quite a few seasons. I bet Bryce Young had to wondering where that was during his time.

This past season was the best Bama defense in quite a few seasons. I bet Bryce Young had to wondering where that was during his time.

That defense would have won Bryce at least one if not two titles. Bryce almost beat UGA with no WR left and no way they lose to UTe or LSU with that defense the following year.

The SECCG in 2020 with Florida was pretty ridiculous as well. We had over 600 yards of total offense, scored 52 points and it was still a six point game at the end.

Coach Saban was the GOAT, no doubt. There were some inexplicable flaws in his teams or mistakes Coach Saban made.
1. Never called a time out in the first half.
2. Special teams were frequently not so special. Especially early on, it seemed every single punt return included an illegal block in the back. Every. Single. One.
3. QB management was bizarre at times (Hurts-Tua, and last year in its entirety.)
4. The biggest failures, however, were keeping BoB and Gol*ing, when it was obvious they were an enormous liability.

Golding loved calling the same ineffective blitzes over and over and over. He’s still doing it at ole miss. Why he thinks having MLBs slam into guards and centers does anything good I’ll never know. It took a dui and his worst season at the same time to get rid of him. I’ll never understand why Saban kept him past season 2.

Golding's defense broke several records at UTSA. And I can see how that picked Saban's interest. It's odd how that success didn't carry over to Bama. His definitely wasn't the kind of defense we had come to enjoy with Smart and Pruitt.

Tua was the ONLY Backup QB that was allowed to come in and Rip It.

I agree with your point #5. Here within lies the problem from 2023. Of the 14 games played last year, only 4 of them did Bama have a significant enough lead to fill confidence to get our backup QB's any real game time playing experience.

I think early on there was a bit of latitude due to injuries. In Gol$ings first year, both Moses and McMillion were slated to start at the ILB spots and went down with season ending injuries with just a few weeks before game 1, forcing 2 true freshmen LBs to start all year and one of those guys had never played LB before putting on a crimson helmet. The next year, Moses was kinda back but very limited, and the other was still in year 2 of being a LB so very much thought to be still learning. It was kinda easy to think some of the issue might not have been all on Gol$ing. In hindsight, however, while maybe year one wasn't all on him, after that a great deal of it was.

In hindsight - completely agree. I was in the camp willing to give him a little more time after year 1 with 2 true freshmen but he never really got the ILBs where they needed to be.
