Yes, drums have been banged, libations consumed, youth wasted, well not totally wasted..over the past 25+ years. ;)

I still play a couple of times a month or so here in the B'ham metro area.

"the Back Nine" on 280, "Neighborhood Bar"-Trussville, "Pub 261"-Pelham, the Riders Harley Davidson dealerships in Trussville and Pelham and various other one nighters etc..
 
Chicago pizza

I have not had Gino's, but if it is any better than Lou Malnati's it will be some kind of good. Deep dish pizza (think pizza pie) with a cornmeal crust. I sure wish I had one right about now.
 
I've had Lou Malnati's also, and it is the best pizza I have ever tasted. I was born and raised in Montgomery and never tried Tony's. I know where it is and will have to try it on a trip down to visit the in-laws.

Geno's East is worth a cab ride if you ever have a layover at O'Hare. It's incredible stuff! Over the years, 100% of those I've recommended it to have agreed.

mrs. exiled is a fan of the Mellow Mushroom, though she gets some sort of sandwich thing or another & not pizza.

Back in the seriously-misspent portion of my youth (as opposed to just the misspent portion...), I really developed a taste for Leonardo's in Gainesville, FL. Leo's sells thick Chicago-style pizza by the slice. Pretty good stuff as best I can recall.

But Geno's...man alive...all others are playing for second place!

There's a very fly-by-night operation here in H'burg that's pretty good. No listing, just word of mouth. You call, & the guy answers "yeah?" You place your order, and he drives his pizza making oven in his truck over & parks outside your house & makes the pizza right there. Interesting concept...

Of course, zero of these are actually located in AL, so I'll wind up with this. Back in my days at UA, we liked BamaBino's pizza. We lived out in Holt, and I was greatly amused once to see our place circled on the map with our name written out beside it. Yeah...we ordered delivery from there more than once...:p
 
I probably made the best pizza I ever made yesterday. Hand made crust, red sauce, pepperoni, sausage, onions, jalapeno, crimini mushrooms, sliced black and green olives, a blend of 3 italian cheeses with sliced tomato on top. Cooked it on a Holland Gas Grill with oak wood chip smoke. Crust was thin and crispy and the smoke added some interesting flavor. The jalapenos and crushed red peppers added just enough zing to get your attention. The pizza sauce was a homemade tomato sauce with enough garlic to stop a vampire dead in his tracks.

Try pizza on your bbq grill sometime. Get the grill hot, 400-450F and add some smoke. Use a pizza stone on the grill and be sure to preheat it and toss down some cornmeal before laying the pizza on it.
 
I have done the pizza on the grill - I just bought a pizza stone looking forward to giving that a try

You made a hand crust pizza dough and you can't make biscuits? (You do know you can grill biscuits, don't you? LOL! Bayou, you're amazing!:)

There are different types of pizza and a pizza joint usually specializes in only one type, though they might make others. The types are so different that I hesitate to call them all "pizza".

Thin crust, thick crust (sicilian), and deep dish are the three primary types. They each use very different dough, which dramatically changes the taste.

Crazy ain't it. I can make bread from scratch but my biscuits really do suck.
