Question: Better SEC coaching career?? 2010 New Coaches

Easy--Derek Dooley, if given enough time. Add to that only one of those three schools takes football even remotely seriously and is willing to spend the resources no matter what it takes to have a successful program.

Dooley in my mind will be a winner. Anybody can win at UT, despite the in-state recruiting challenges. It is still a powerhouse program and one of the top programs in the country. I think Dooley is a winner anyway, so I see him competing with UF in the East in a few years.

I'm just not sold on Dooley yet. The deck is stacked against him already in his first year on the job and it isn't likely that there is a miracle fix right around the corner, especially if Kiffins recruiting tactics draw down the wrath of the NCAA. Fulmer recruited poorley his last few years and it showed, the "talent" Kiffin did bring in has been thinned by transfers, armed robberies, etc. To compound this Dooley will be judged, fairly or unfairly, against Saban Meyer and possibly Richt for his tenure and if he can't get some mojo going against these guys on the field or in the recruiting game the comparisons may not be to friendly. The UT fan base may be patient, but patience can grow thin in a short amount of time in the SEC.

On the other hand Phillips and Caldwell will not have the same pressure heaped on them at UK and Vandy, if Caldwell produces a six win season in his tenure we may consider that "successful". Same goes if Joker can get UK to the Music City Bowl more often than not.

Success is relative in this situation. MSU finished with 5 wins this year, Aub ended with 8, how many of us think Chizik has a brighter future than Mullen?

Normally, I would pick Dooley and I do think Dooley was a solid hire for UT, however I have to go with Joker, there is enough talent there now that he should be able to at least reach a few mid or low level bowls and that will keep the wildcats happy, for a while anyway.

I know everyone and their brother is counting Tennessee down for the count this year, with good reason, I might add. Still, I have a hunch that they will be better than they should be. They can surprise a few people if they suck it up and get on the same page and play as one. I just have a feeling that they will do that.

Any chance of Phillips being successful at Kentucky? Not sure how well he can recruit. Right now he has the benefit of having one of the best players in the SEC, Randall Cobb.

Very solid post! The way you look at it, Phillips very well could be considered the most successful of the three a few years down the road. As you stated, bowl games at Kentucky will be considered successful (Music City). In Knoxville the fans are not going to be happy with lower tier bowls long term.

Depth is going to be the big down fall. As Dooley has stated, "we have 1s and 3s". Basically the drop off behind the starters is pretty big.

I am with dman on this one. As for Phillips and Caldwell, with the state of the housing market, they need to go ahead and get with a realtor and put their houses on the market.

Well.... I have to agree with the guy that said Tennessee is the only one that takes football seriously. lol. I think Joker will do pretty good for Kentucky, but I think Dooley will have a better win~loss record than him. If they were at different schools, I believe it would be fairly hard to tell. I think Tennessee has an easier time recruiting better players than kentucky and vandy.

I'm not even sure that Caldwell will be the coach at Vandy next year, so he's out.

Bingo. Caldwell is just the necessary "warm body" for Vandy. He would do well to get an application in at Academy stocking footballs; it's as close to the sport as he will be next year.

Dooley seems to be picked as the better coach at the school with a far better tradition. Poke Chop is right that the alumni want results, but I believe that the first year will be a freebie unless he loses to both Vandy and Kentucky (I think UK gets 'em this year). Next year will step the pressure up a bit, and the third year will be make or break. Swami says - Dooley leaves in three to four years, but only for greener pastures.

Joker has the best bet of the three for longevity. UK fans are pretty much alright with 5-7 or 6-6. Heck, if he wins often enough, they might even give him a lighter. Swami says - Joker has awesome job security, but is stuck for life coaching mediocre talent to a mediocre record with mediocre fan support.
