Bobby Johnson for coach????

Re: Bobby Johnson????

This guy should be the #1 target right now. He's already a winner in the SEC at Vandy of all places -- with the additional talent, depth, facilities, etc. at Bama, he would be terrific.

Re: Bobby Johnson????

I too am a Bobby Johnson fan. He doesnt have the wins to back it up, but they have improved every year under him. They went from uncompetitive without him, to very competitive, to 9 wins in 2 years, which is very good for Vandy. They are in every game they play, and are very rarely blown out. I would like to see what he could do with some talent.

Re: Bobby Johnson????

I think he is a great coach for Vanderbilt, but not Alabama.

He has done an outstanding job at Vandy, but I just don't see him as our head coach.

Re: Bobby Johnson????

Since last season i have said that if/when we make a coaching changing that we should give BJ serious consideration!

Re: Bobby Johnson????

While I certainly think Bobby Johnson is a good coach, I'm not convinced that he would be great at Bama. Of course, I'm sure when Auburn hired Tubs away from Ole Miss there were a few folks with questions about him too.

He's a good coach, no problem with that. He may be getting thrown under the bus of other names, but IMO I don't think he's got what it takes. We'll just have to wait and see. Would be interesting to have a complete list of all candidates the AD has in mind during this search!!

Re: Bobby Johnson????

Bobby's great at coaching Vandy up to be competitive and pull an upset once every couple of years; and that's what he should keep doing, IMO.

And, did someone really say "he's a winner in the SEC"? So, all you have to do is win 5 games one year, and you're a winner?

Re: Bobby Johnson????

Next year will really tell the tale on what BJ has done at Vandy. We've had 4 & 5 win seasons before (not back to back since the early 90's, though)...need to see him get over the hump. He also makes some clock management decisions that boggle the mind, and almost every game has to blow time-outs because he can't get a play in.
BTW-I think we beat ONE SEC team this year--other victories were Temple(worst in NCAA), TSU, & Duke. I love BJ and what he's done as far as bringing the talent level up in a huge way, but...wouldn't call him "a winner in the SEC" yet. Hope springs eternal, though.

Re: Bobby Johnson????

You have to be impressed with what Johnson has done at Vandy, but ...

LSU a few years ago tried the "he-made-Vandy-competitive-so-think-what-he-could-do-at-a-bigtime-program" approach with Gary Dinardo.

He was fired in the middle of his fifth season at LSU on the heels of eight straight losses and back-to-back losing seasons.

Re: Bobby Johnson????

Vandy plays everyone tough, but I just don't know if he would fit?

Fans might have some of the same problems with his conservative & occasionally predictable playcalling that they had w/Shula. Sometimes, we as fans can sit in the stands and forecast a run up the middle or a quick short pass when what we really need is 10 yards. Sound familiar?

BUT he was a proven coach on the 2A level (coached Furman to a championship game before coming to Vandy), and the same consultant that is working with Bama worked with Vandy on the hire.

I can't see Bama looking in that direction, though.

Re: Bobby Johnson????

I'm glad y'all think so highly of him, but please let Vandy for once keep a coach!!! Also, I can't see folks taking well to hiring him because he's not a big enough name--and does not have a winning record in the SEC

Re: Bobby Johnson????

I don't like him for Alabama. As a Vanderbilt student I am not really a huge fan of him for Vanderbilt. He is very predictable in his offense and doesn't want to make changes. He has made Vanderbilt more competitive and I think they will continue to improve. Especially with the quarterback they are getting from Prattville. Anyways he is a good talent evaluator with grabbing under the radar kids such as Jay Cutler, Earl Bennett, Chris Nickson, Reshard Langford, and Goff, but his offensive stubborness reminds me way too much of Shula. His three biggest wins (Arkansas (2005), Tennessee (2005), and Georgia (2006)) all came when those teams were way down.
